LT42 Not to be pedantic but you dont know him. You talked to him 2 times.
I only said I “kinda” know him.
And a “klang” can just be speaking to someone briefly (someone else here recently attempted to claim a “klang” for just spotting someone at a distance, which obviously doesn’t count though).
I’ve also been ‘friends’ with him on facebook for 7 years, not that it means that much.
Anyway.
LT42 And fuck Patrick Mason, not that he plays anything listenable anyway but his sets are about him and not the bilge hes playing. His “performances” are the antipode of what DJing is about imo.
I understand your point, it is certainly removed from the style and conduct of most the DJs I grew up idolising. It should ultimately be more about the music than the DJ during a set and there are shades of Steve Aoki-esque EDM show shenanigans.
But also depending on what you’re doing the actual act of DJing is generally a lot easier and quicker than how it used to be - you don’t need to spend ages cueing up and beatmatching records - so if you’re not doing anything complex then there can be plenty of time to leap about if you wish.
The other thing is, when he was just playing more housey stuff years ago in smaller rooms, I’m pretty sure he didn’t act like this (at least when I saw him DJ anyway). He was more the usual quietly doing his thing (albeit off a laptop) and played good sets. If he was a complete rando who I’d only just found out about now then I’d probably be less sympathetic, but having seen him around DJing a different way before, and also him often on the dancefloor, I’m more willing to accept that this is how he wants to do things and that he to some extent deserves to be there.
What I’m most curious about is what proportion of people in the crowds actually enjoy what he’s doing? In the selective videos that get posted most people seem to go along with it, though I’ve got no idea how much of that is grudgingly and if there are also plenty of occasions when he loses lots of the audience. He seems to have at least some popularity.
Music wise he actually plays quite a bit of good stuff, but then he does throw in too many too obvious tunes and too much trash as well. I’m not going to defend anyone playing Alice Deejay for instance - that was cheesy garbage even when I was 11.
