Did anyone else develop a love for this when it happened? I found I enjoyed it more a few years into clubbing and found it worked much better with alcohol too.
What classics did you love / what was lesser known?

NasserAlazzawi I don’t recall that era being particularly funky and soulful? Any tunes/artists to go on?
When I think of funky/soulful, my mind is immediately taken nights at Hard Times in Leeds and Rulin at Ministry (all 90s)
This whole CD, almost every track a beauty

There was definitely a move towards more of the above sort of house in some clubs (e.g. the Annexe at Cream where Yousef was resident) as people bored of arpeggiated trance records. I have always liked a decent house club, probably more than any other, because it brings the birds onto the dancefloor and a club that has a good ratio of women is just a much, much nicer, less moody vibe.
yeah it’ll not so much be an era as much as it’s when my attention was drawn to it. Or local clubs had second rooms playing good stuff!
Some great shouts in here already!
bosstrabs been lucky, went to a lot of great house clubs with my wife and old friends. Went to a lot of prog/trance clubs with my brother. Nothing about the early noughties that stood out as soulful and funky. It was dominated by the subliminal/Morillo shit and the K hole Lawler vibe. Prefer my house music to sound black, soulful with lots of vocals
alistair Certainly Liverpool and Manchester seemed soulful.
Like I said, you had Yousef driving the music policy in the Annexe.
Manchester had a lot of soulful clubs at the time, though I can’t remember them all. Remember going to Venus at Club V, which was very much a soulful/funky house club.
This was a beauty too

I’m pals with a guy that used to play with him at Zanzibar, Dennis Gregory and he often gives me a heads up when he’s on - Always joyful occasions
I was thinking the likes of the Defected in the House (2003-2005 era) and the likes of Hed Kandi.
I would have happily included this as I did hear it in that era but… 1996!??!?!
bosstrabs Some mint tracks on that mate. Good shout
NasserAlazzawi You can’t go far wrong with Mood II Swing
Nas, two names for you who kept producing the goods in that era are Kerri Chandler, Theo Parrish. Dave Lee aka Joey Negro is consistently strong.
Cheers MC
Mad_Cyril Venus was also pony. A precursor to those clubs where people go to try look good, be seen, ordering stupid bottles of vodka
Rather than for the music.
That’s fair enough, it did seem to set itself up as the north’s Moneypenny’s.
I only went about twice but I can’t really remember the names of the other nights that were playing this stuff.
Was OneCentral open or was that later 2000s? Seemed to alternate between house and electro nights.
