100%. I don’t care if it’s out of key or slides a bit on the beatmatching; if it keeps my head going, great. Many mixes I hear these days do little more than help me type faster.

You’re going to lay into me for saying this, but listening to these old essential mixes….some of them really have flow and energy. It’s dynamic and fun. I swear Prog ruined everything. Too concentrated on the perfect mix rather than what works the floor. XX and XXX could do both, why they’re still around, but many of these 2004 mixes never get out of 3rd gear. It’s frustrating to listen to at time.

More Deep than what belongs in the thread but this is a fantastic modern take on the House I grew up with. Early night, in the spot, beans taken, looking around, and thinking - this is going to be a good night - all heads bobbing.

EDIT just out the other day on Omena (an excellent label for lower tempo House, Funk and wobbly Downtempo). Lovely track.

After that it was 2:00 AM tops off and we’re bang into the techno.

I post loads of that channel every week and Houseum which is another proper deep house channel. I completely agree with you about most modern house music. There’s no edge to it apart from techno. It’s all become to nice and pretty.

Dubman i was listening to a bunch of old mr g stuff last week and thought the same. i’m moving some of my own sound in that direction now, more bleed between house and techno and a little rough around the edges.

Even Italo redux has lost any edge. At least what Ivan Smaghhghghhhgeeeghghhehgee was playing a few years ago was at least interesting. Now the Italo types can throw in Mr Flagio and thing, yeah, I got cred after my unreleased Solomon edit.

The Lo-Fi thing had a good degree of production skill. I’ll give them that. They make it sound rough and raw but on purpose and often times it was excellent on a big system. It was well-made music, if tracky and useless at home.

Strange period the early noughties. You had all that filtered Defected stuff, Hed Kandi plus all that Trevor Nelson / Dream Team takeover as they were on Radio 1. The death of superclubs, end of Twilo and SnD doing strange sets one on an iMac g5……

Suppose the soulful house scene got more people back into clubs - and Ibiza- and that spawned the minimal/deep/tech scene post around 2006 that we are sort of still riding the wave today

She’s now on Soundcloud. Apparently sometimes people can’t access the youtube version of this due to a country restriction on one of the tracks. Always happens with classics sets for other DJs but I was only warned it wouldn’t be seen in countries like Iran and Syria ()who I’m sure are devo’d)

yeah for sure, i used play these when i had to play in front of ‘house’ crowd who couldn’t handle 9 minute breakdowns. it’s a sound that i don’t think is super common now or at least i don’t run into it often, while being completely out of touch myself.
