Along_the_Wire I yield to no one in my admiration of olympians. Loving it irrespective of the empty stadia but 400m hurdlers are converted, unsuccessful 400m runners. Rawlinson, Akabusi, Dai Green etc all started out at 400m. Don’t remember Michael Johnson chancing his arm at hurdles

Hursty most of us would feel uncomfortable shuffling through a door in a large crowd at speed, have you ever tried jumping over a hurdle into water in the middle of a crowd at high speed? That race is a grueling mental test.

Strange take, its still a competitive race for those involved. Half of English football for example is made up of fellas (and girls) who couldn’t cut the mustard at the very top, should they just abandon the lower leagues too? It’s all relative. There are plenty of other sports in the Olympics that should be looked at first. Skateboarding, BMXing, Surfing and 3 on 3 Basketball for a start.

Talking of contrived, how about the triathalons you mentioned? Obviously failures at each of the single disciplines, no? Let’s not get into the history of the respective sports, especially given steeple chasing was an original sport from the very first modern Olympics and triathalons made its first appearance in 2000.
