I remember it vividly, as a couple of us mates from uni met one mate who was working at Merrill Lynch. There’s a pub near their offices at Ropemaker Square (Ropemaker Place?)
The whole place was packed with square mile types watching the TVs in the pub. One woman in tears, telling people she had been on the phone to someone in one of the towers at the time, probably about 3pm our time if I recall correctly.
All very bewildering and raw.
Then someone switched the channel to CNN and there was an image of the top of the tower flaming with a plane stuck in it as the backdrop to the newsreader (the way the Yanks do it), and my mate Si just goes “Look, it’s the tallest newsreader in the world!” Cue massive disdainful looks from everyone within earshot, us finishing our pints and basically legging it. Talk about misreading the room.
