303abuser you’ll be fine, sounds like you are getting the volume in which is always key. How’s your nutrition?

I did an 80k in the mountains back in May, got cooked in the heat and didn’t get enough salt on board so although I finished it wasn’t pretty, medical attention was required 😂

I’ve got a 100 miler booked for September and possibly a 77miler next month as a warm up.

We will see

Hursty I hope so. Three weeks over 100k in June, a 50k training run a month from now, and 3 weeks over 110k by mid-august. If I can get enough hill training in, I should be ok. I want to enjoy it and hopefully be able to “race” it without death marching.

Heat is a massive obstacle, no shame in getting the medics involve haha. The course I’m doing (same as my 50k last fall, just two loops this time) is pretty exposed and parts are in a valley that heat up and get little airflow. Last year was 20 degrees, which was perfect, but if it’s anywhere near 30, it’s a completely different beast.

What kind of weekly volume are you doing? The thought of 100 miles is still so foreign to me. Unless I accidentally really love this 100k, I’m thinking more frequent, much shorter races next year.

Edit: Nutrition is good, I think. Slow drip tailwind, eating a combination of “real” food, aiming for 100 calories every 20 minutes, 60-80 grams of carbs per hour, with a little protein/fat in the form of almonds and cashews.

You’ll be delighted and impressed to know I knocked off a cheeky 7k before work this morning.

      How I roll!

I’ll be doing 5k at lunchtime, just can’t do any more, I find it so boring. I’m figuring that anything is better than nothing. Kudos to you lads doing 100k! My app tells me I’ve done 110k in 2024 in total lol.

Smallman1 shouldn’t he be skeletal skinny, like prime Steve Ovett, and be wearing a headband? Oooh, park run mince! Where did I put my singlet??

According to my Garmin, I can do a 5k in 20 mins. I’m happy with that and the best bit is I don’t have to actually do it. Cheers Garmin!

Do you know what Garmin rhymes with?

      WIN.

      Get yourself a VO2 Max score of 71.1 - that’s winning, lads.

Millsy I actually find road running to be a bit dull unless I’m doing speed work. Trail running is a whole other thing though, it’s like being a kid and running through the woods, just with more eating.

Smallman1 It’s about the only time I listen to power prog now. And drum & bass is fantastic for tempo runs.

mono-stereo It’s not bad for your joints at all, as long as you run with good form.

Millsy 😂 I’ve only own one pair and that was before I really started running. Running through the trees, up and down hills, just being in nature while building fitness really is a lot of fun. At the volume I’m doing it can be a grind sometimes, but if you can train like a more reasonable human, it’s a great time.

303abuser Sounds like your nutrition is pretty sound, mine has been my achilles heal mainly because I never practice it during training, but I’m trying to make amends for it now. Tailwind does seem to be popular so will defo try that out.

With regards to volume, I don’t have any targets but I expect to be hitting north of 100k soon. I watched a vid the other day of a Brit marathon runner who clocks over 200k a week and he was saying others are doing up to 250k a week!

That is mental, but apparently its what it takes to get the results for marathon running.

I never run with tunes, but then I love being outside so its always a pleasure to be out

          Lol. Sean’s a trail runner?

Hursty Nutrition is one of the things I practice a lot and I really treat all of my long runs as logistical practice. Tailwind in one flask, nuun with added salt in another, and if it’s hot, just water in the 1.5L bladder. Slow drip calories and salt, drink based on my craving for plain water. When I got about 45k into the 50 last fall, all I really wanted to eat was chocolate and that was fine for that distance, but I know that won’t hold up over 100k.

I think for 50k and shorter distances, 100k per week is enough and strength training makes a huge difference. Lifting makes up for a lot of volume when you’re constantly climbing and descending. The idea of doing much more than I am now and maintaining any sort of life seems like a massive challenge and maybe not worth it.

And yeah, I run with music maybe half the time and when I do, I wear Shokz at low volume so I can still hear everything around me. I find the more I run, the less I need music. Information dense podcasts really do help pass the time quickly on long runs for me though.

@Hursty Can’t remember if you’re a zero drop guy or not, but if you are and need a pair of race shoes, the Mont Blanc carbons are magic. Tried them out on two long runs so far, they’re comfortable and fast.

          2 months later

Here’s the last update that no one asked for …

Ended up having to drop from the 100k to 50k distance because of a calf/tibial tendon issue that I’ve been dealing with since June. It forced me to drop the mileage on my two biggest training weeks and I wasn’t confident in medicating myself through a 16+ hour race.

After all that, I ran so well in the 50k. Last year it was 21 degrees and it took me just over 7 hours. This year it was 33 degrees at the peak and I finished in 6:39, ended up 18th overall out of 173 runners and I think 7th in age group. The heat caused some absolute carnage, especially for the 100k/100 mile runners, one person ended up in hospital and the dnf rate was the highest they’ve had in 25 years.

It was another really amazing experience, so happy that I got it done. 8 months of training was rough at times and I’m ready for a break, but the reward of finding out what I was capable of doing was totally worth it. I can’t recommend doing something like this enough.

Fair fucks mate. That’s very impressive.

Millsy Thanks, the heat was insane. I’m pretty proud of this one.

And on a serious note, that is top effort, really is, well played that man!

Smallman1 Cheers. So glad I dropped distances. I passed a few of the hundred milers who were out there since 8 am the day before and they looked wrecked. Only 17/50 of them finished.

Ed’s always banging on about running and broccoli and treacles and roofs and builders and restaurants and Eternal, but I’ve never heard of him taking part in such things.

Gauntlet across the face from 303 here.

I’ve hung up my long distance shoes.

It was the picture of the old lady pipping me to the post at the Brighton Marathon wot dun it.

That bastard Dermo never let me forget it!

Along_the_Wire Thanks, it was a great experience.

Millsy Let’s set up a collection to send him to Canada, we can run it together.

Hursty Thanks, I really did. It felt like I could have done it in 6 hours without the crazy heat. No idea what happened to my injury either; didn’t show up during the race and it appears to be inexplicably gone.

Here’s a video from one of the 100k runners, it’s a really cool landscape.

303abuser easily below 6 with training I would say but it’s hard to predict with Ultras.

I’m on the start like of a 102 miler this Saturday, it’s going to be interesting having spent august enjoying the sun and drinking 😆
