The primary aim of US foreign policy is the same as any hegemonic power. It’s to stay on top. They do it with a combination of nice alliance-building and soft cultural stuff, and genuine power projection.

I’d rather have the US on top than some of the alternatives, mind.

Jules72 Christ, Jules. Can you not read between the lines? What did the Truman Doctrine have to do with the invasion of Iraq? It’s such a miopic viewpoint to say the Yanks only had the spread of Communism on their minds going back as far as the 60s. It was a far broader system of power projection that was fueled by the MIC. All you’re doing is parroting PR. Vietnam only served to bolster the defense industry, there is nothing to suggest they ever cared about Communism reaching Saigon in a realistic sense (which it ultimately did). No point in digressing into this anyway as it’s a subject that doesn’t normally need pointing out.
Same with Ukraine, it’s all under the pretense of saving democracy when it’s far more complex than that and is largely fuelled by the armaments machine now that it has gone on this long. The Ukraine will be in debt to the US for generations to come. How can anyone prove the Americans don’t have Ukraine’s best interests at heart? You can’t, but you can look at the evidence that’s directly in front of your face for the ulterior motives. It’s an easy game to play. Plausible deniability is a doctrine that gets far more usage than anything Truman (who was a war criminal by the way) dreamt up.

Moscow, in particular Patushev, has finally admitted the war is with NATO (Primarily the US and UK) and Ukraine is the battlefield. The main criteria within the non conspiratorial PNAC neo-conservative manifesto have largely been ticked off in the last 15 years with only regime change in Syria, Iran and Russia left on the agenda. With China’s forseeable economic infrastructure looking wobbly it looks like the Yanks are playing a decent poker hand.
Even if Patrushev is sincere it still would still be a suicidal way to enter a conflict as they’ll be bled dry militarily, they must know this.

BlainSA To be fair, 7 months after those predictions, which were correct, Putin changed the Penal Code and issued a decree for mass mobilisation which was necessary because they had effectively collapsed. The numbers are larger now but the tactical effectiveness of the force is less.

A couple of things here, Hannu. Michta is undoubtebly qualified to speak on the matter, however, he’s a well known NATO hawk and he’s being disingenuous here. He knows as well as anyone that the arms buildup on the Russian border doesn’t square with his “logic” about Sweden and Finland. Even you know this. Correct me if I’m wrong but all Finland have done on their border is erect a new fence? He seems to be aiming his post at pro-Ukraine Americans who don’t know any different.
