It’s not impossible that they might not have wanted to do this, in which case they deserve some sympathy.
However, it’s also possible they did.
But more pertinently, I don’t understand why people often trot out sentiments like your first part here - I mean, everyone was “someone’s kid”. Even people like Hitler, or Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, were “someone’s kid”.
“Hey, please don’t try and assassinate Hitler - he’s someone’s kid!!”
“Don’t sentence Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death - he’s someone’s kid!!”
Erm, it doesn’t really hold water now does it?
