gcw Any particular threshold to aim for e.g. 50,000 and below?
Short answer, no. Too many variables to just stick a number on it. I’ve had a car with 15,000 miles on the clock when I bought it which went wrong with alarming degrees of frequency. Had a car with 75,000 miles on it when I bought it which never game me a minute’s strife.
Think the best car I’ve ever owned I bought from a car supermarket - Audi A5, 3 years old with 60k on the clock. Mechanically perfect, never had a problem etc etc. I’d tend towards a well maintained high-miler than a questionable low mileage car.
I’d happily buy something with up to 100k on the clock, if:
1) It was German, Japanese or Korean (mass stereotype, but wouldn’t go near anything French or Italian at that kinda price)
2) It has a full service history (plus no major mechanicals needing replacing soon - cam belt etc etc)
