Pans are in the dishwasher @ the moment, will be out later this afternoon 👍

benson

In a manner of speaking. I understand tomorrow’s call will be on why the NHS is in crisis.

interesting how 45% of doctors being on strike for 3 days has played second fiddle to the views of a football pundit these last 2-3 days… hmmm 🤔

Jules72 Its really weird. Almost no coverage and patients seem completely unaware.

benson do they really get paid less than a Pret barrista or is that just bullshit?

Had a skinny latte from Pret this morning as it happens.

        Which is nice.

          alistair

Basic pay for a new starter is less than top pay for pret barista.

They go on to earn around £60k just before being a consultant. That is for a basic 40 hour week. Except for all of my training and for theirs, full time is actually 48 hours a week. ⅓ of those hours are weekends or nights. So they can earn up to £75k once you account for the extra hours and a bump for unsociable hours. They get 37% extra for working hours between 21:00 and 07:00. So not even double time. They also get that for working on Sunday. Saturday is normal time

Working conditions have got much shitter over the years. Back in 2005 I remember being in Lewisham A&E at 5 am and it was totally empty of patients. We had a kick around with scrunched up paper towels taped in a ball. That would be unimaginable now. Weirdly some of this is a result of reducing hours worked in a week, I used to work 91 hour weeks but I got all of the shit stuff out of the way in 7 days (13 hour shifts each day split between nights and days). Now they only do 2 nights at a time so it actually screws up a lot more of your time off.

When I started we all paid 6% into a pension. Now it is tiered. I pay 13.5%. It used to be final salary, now it is career average.

I left med school with £40k of debt, they leave with £80k.

It’s a pretty shit life to be honest. A lot of my colleagues did not have kids until quite late.

If I had my time again, I probably would not do it. I love the medicine but the system is screwed. Consultants will be next on strike.

I am covering nights tonight and tomorrow. Doing it for time off in lieu. Not for extra cash.

vinnyt77 You’re becoming more like Marie Antoinette by the day…

            Thank you sir!

alistair The freelancers who didn’t get paid this weekend are the collateral damage for his ego trip

Lollers, this old chestnut is always run out the stooges, the ‘hard working people of Great Britain’, faux solidarity, usually with some middle management type, who’s dismissal will see better working conditions and pay for hundreds of others. Won’t somebody think of the scabs!

Most of the opposition to Lineker’s comments in here are weak as piss. It’s this old trope that your argument has to be absolutely bomb proof to an almost impossible level of minutiae, or you can’t make it; outrage at any level of contradiction or hypocrisy to shut down an argument. The same shit is levelled at Greta Thunberg, because she exhaled carbon whilst making a point about saving the planet, she shouldn’t make the point at all. It’s nonsense.

We all know the horrors of history, we all know what it looked like in the early days, we know how they operate, and we should all call it out when we see it, no matter how shaky the ground we are standing on or what our working contracts look like. Pedantry isn’t an excuse for inaction, and this thread reeks of pedants. We might disagree on how hard the wind is blowing, but, unless you are a stooge, unless you are a cunt, unless you are full of hate, you should applaud anyone asking a government to robustly defend their rhetoric on any matter.

If history matters, then the lesson of the Second World War is that every last person who lived through it and it’s atrocities wished something had been done sooner, that people had spotted the signs, that a pre-emptive strike was launched. Good on anyone pointing out what they believe to be the signs of what maybe to come.

You’ll hear nothing but ‘small boats’ and conflation of ‘illegal people’ for the next two years, and the response should be questions about the funding of our border security and the difficult but nuanced questions about our laws, not pedantry about how the questions are phrased or who asked them.

Amps well said. Best speech against this horrific Bill was Caroline Lucas. It still passed the Commons though, unsurprisingly.

              Amps
My take is slightly different, and based solely on the words typed in the following sentence.

Lineker was an insufferable cunt before all this, and now he’s (still) an insufferable cunt.

He’s now the new poster boy for the likes of Ash Sarkar and Owen Jones 🤮. Is he still at loggerheads with HMRC for millions in unpaid taxes?

I accept that it’s pedantic and splitting hairs and missing the point to argue about whether his comparison was valid.

The point is that he’s a millionaire tax dodger trying to claim the moral high ground without saying anything of value about the substance of the matter which is how do we stop people drowning in the sea, how do we stop enriching the the gangs, how to we provide asylum to the genuinely needy and how do we stop squandering millions on foreign criminals.

Amps We all know the horrors of history, we all know what it looked like in the early days

If it’s so obvious, then how about you quickly explain how what was said by Braverman was similar to that spewed out by the Nazi regime? And do that by clarifying “what it looked like in the early days”. I’ve still seen no one manage to actually draw any kind of real comparison. Your post contains a lot of blow-hard pompous self-righteous guff, but zero evidence to support your clear nonsense.

But LT said only thickos thought that Lineker was suggesting the UK was heading down the same path as Germany under the Nazis!

Oh wait, unlike benson you actually are a thicko.

benson I take it brexit has led to a big drop in nurse availability?

These days you’d be insane to go into medicine given the hours, stress and shit pay… I’ll be telling my kids to stay away when the time comes - we are going to have a serious shortage of nurses and doctors in years to come

hugopal I’ve still seen no one manage to actually draw any kind of real comparison. Your post contains a lot of blow-hard pompous self-righteous guff, but zero evidence to support your clear nonsense.

Some of the mad stuff I’ve seen “in defence” of Lineker’s take….. totally irrelevant and bizarre nonsense about how it was The Spanish who started interring insurgents in concentration camps and how the Nazis were really doing something else. I’ve really genuinely tried to put my own views to one side and try to see where they’re coming from….. and it’s really not a world of logic and rationality as far as I can discern.

You’re completely wasting your time trying to follow up that thread imo.

C_J it’s just another example of the left’s favourite lazy go-to move du jour of “anyone who disagrees with me is a Nazi” whenever they don’t like someone else’s view but have no real argument to back it up.

hugopal I think what Amps is saying is that if stupid bastards like yourself and Alistair keep voting for Tories against the tide of fairness for all peoples then the NHS will be in the gas chamber, Hugo. Try to see things for how they are and not hypothetically and maybe you’ll win one of those arguments you have with yourself.

LT42 then the NHS will be in the gas chamber

They’re going to put the entire NHS in one chamber? Must be one bloody big chamber!! You’ll also need an absurd amount of forklift trucks.

Jules72 Oxford was over 20% EU staff. It’s a huge problem.

Pulling an all nighter tonight at the coal face. My colleague who is the consultant on call would have had to be in all night and done 24 hours straight. So having me in has been a touch for them.

hugopal It’s good that you finally saw sense and now fully understand the situation. 84 paragraphs later but its still progress.

benson don’t know how you do it….

At least we got our sovereignty back eh?! It’s only now that it’s becoming crystal clear what the massive impact of brexit on our labour markets has been … Boris Johnson has a lot to answer for

Anyone else think Sunaks glasses are two sizes too small for his little Roland rat face?

Pre paid electric meters to come in line with direct debit bill payers, about fucking time.

LT42 did you not read the part where Benson, who has worked for the NHS for twenty years, is saying that the NHS is basically in the shitter because it costs them money to go to work which is why Jez Hunt (Con, South West Surrey) is sorting it for them?

                            • LT42 replied to this.

C_J lol, the bit about Jez Hunt arriving on the NHS Brexit bus with a giant plaster?

No the but about lifetime pension allow …. oh, you know what, never mind.

                              TORY SCUM!! NAZI BASTARDS!!11

Jez Hunt has saved the NHS. That’s it, CJ. That’s all you needed to say.

LT42 Hasn’t he saved it ‘again’ ? Didn’t he save it once when he was Health Secretary?!

                                • LT42 replied to this.

vinnyt77 if I set my house on fire and then fight the flames myself whilst saving the dog, can I be a hero too?

For your pioneering work in ‘the sim’, you’ll always be my hero LT 💪
