He doesn’t need to do well for himself on the back of this job, he seems to be more concerned about his legacy. He could leave the UK (as he probably planned when the racists in his party opted to go with barbie), and continue making vast amounts of money on the back of his connections. Instead he’s decided to take on a pretty thankless job, that pretty much eats you up from the inside.
