Nothing really to boast about with our first half showing today, but we were the better side in the second half even with the few chances we had. I’m disappointed that Hutchinson didn’t get that header across the line and we didn’t get our first point from a match.
We absolutely out-classed Belgium in the first game. Croatia ran over us like a monster truck. I think we’ve shown flourishes where we can play against top quality teams. Our inexperience on certain things like tactics, along with a few holes in certain positions like midfield and keeper were heavily exposed. Today was a classic example of how we missed Porto’s Stephen Estaquio in midfield who was out due to injury. Borjan was awful today and his reaction time looked slow on goals that I think better keepers would have saved.
Morocco are a lot better side than their ranking suggests. I expect them to go pretty far in the round of 16. They broke down our high press really well and their back line didn’t let a mouse through and also did the same with Croatia and Belgium.
In summary, I feel like if we’d been in a different group we’d probably have gotten out. Arguably we were in the toughest group of the lot. We beat the US, Mexico and Japan in the build up to this.
