Homegrove You must have a local döner-kebab before you leave. Visiting Berlin always puts me off kebab you can get here, because they’re always absolute shit compared to the ones I had in Berlin.

Döner kebabs here are still greasy crap (and yes I’ve tried the most recommended place before) - I don’t understand how people can enjoy that stuff. Maybe some might consider them less shit than elsewhere, but they’re still shit.

If you must have something of that ilk then at least go for more like a shawarma, with actual meat - Maroush on Adalbertstrasse or Kebap With Attitude on Gipsstrasse are pretty much the only two places I’ve liked.

rhouses Can’t say the food in Berlin stuck with me, but I enjoyed the vibes and the burger at The Bird.

Yeah, The Bird is decent.

Döner isn’t actual meat? I’m all ears for this explanation.

Would imagine this depends on the parameters framing one’s definition of meat.

Can remember, back in the 90’s being offered ‘Meat or Chicken’ by the waitress at an end of season awards ‘dinner’. Very confusing!

There are no grey areas with Hugo, its either black or white so I just wanted clarification as it sounds like he’s saying Döner kebabs in Berlin are made from something other than meat.

          A fair comment!

I’ve put on my waders, Cyril, and I’m striding toward the undergrowth!

LT42 perhaps I should have been a bit more precise with my wording - obviously döners will contain meat, but my point is that they’re often whizzed up with all sorts of other crap like gristle and phosphates:

              https://www.thelocal.de/20161121/this-is-what-is-really-inside-your-dner-kebab

It’s true that some places which call themselves “döner” that do have the meat on the spit which mostly resembles the still fully formed sliced chunks of chicken or whatever it is, but even then they’re practically without fail overly greasy crap with god knows what else in there.

Ultimately, I’ve never eaten a döner that didn’t seem like a piece of crap, while very rarely you can find an alright shawarma that won’t coat your guts with grease and give you explosive diarrhea.

Its layers of meat and layers of fat, Hugo. There’s no mystery.

I guess you didn’t click on the link I put in my above reply.

jc1 Any recommendations of which of these (many!) nights to go to in Berlin this weekend? https://ra.co/events/de/berlin?startDate=2025-06-06&endDate=2025-06-07

Obviously it would help a bit to know your tastes?

But on Friday if you’re after some techno then Tresor would be a decent bet - Carl Craig & Mike Banks upstairs and some decent DJs down in the cells. They’re usually alright for letting in tourists, though if you have it then wear black just in case: https://ra.co/events/2164814

On the Saturday then Else could be fun, especially if you’ll be already in the mood for partying from the early evening; it’s an outdoor venue but with a roof, plus some views on to the river Spree, doors open late afternoon, get there in time for sunset. Bouncers can occasionally be strict even with tickets.
Efdemin and Luigi Tozzi should be familiar names to a few on here. The night should range from tech-housier techno, to more looped, hypnotic techno. One of the DJs on the bill is actually someone I once met aages ago at a Digweed gig in London, though they don’t really spin similar music to Diggers ha: https://ra.co/events/2134832

jc1 will need to pack their suitcase especially for those!…

Dr Rubinstein, playing at Gegen, is always good though. Plays a lot of slightly proggy acid trance, which I think would appeal to some on here.

hugopal thanks! We’d originally picked out that Else day/night but held off buying tickets until we saw what the weather was going to be like. The weather isn’t looking too great so looking at other options, although good to hear it has a roof.

The daytime start and sensible 6am finish are defo plus points. I remember going to Berghain the first time and seeing that one of the DJs I wanted to see wasn’t starting for another 12 hours! My mates are flying back on Sunday night so won’t want to be getting silly with timings.

House, techno, tech house etc all good, just avoiding anything too pots and pans.

Yeah, don’t worry about the rain. Looks like it should ease up later on anyway.

Following on from Rich’s comment above, unless you’re open for something kinky then I think it’d still be the best option.

The peak there is usually around Sunday evening, so that’s not a surprise.
