You have exactly the same scenario on a dual carriage ways all over the UK, two lanes, 70 mph speed limit and no hard shoulder. Dual carriage ways also have junctions on both sides of the carriage way. If you look at some of the examples of the people killed many haven’t helped themselves. The old couple up near Sheffield had a blow out but pulled over and stopped instead of driving to the lay-by. They also remained in the vehicle.
The woman heading the campaign lost her son due to an incident on the motorway, which is very tragic, but that got me thinking about what was he doing there in the first place. I will assume that he was in a stationary vehicle on the outside lane. Most All modern cars these days have TPMS to tell you that your tires are losing pressure, in this instance you could continue to drive then park in the lay-by. They have DTCs that will give you plenty of warning that your vehicle has a problem and needs to be looked at by a professional. It will also put it in limp mode so you can continue to drive it. If the driver ignores these warnings then that is at their own peril. Or if for some reason you do end up stationary you get everyone out as soon as it is safe to do so.
