Reading this thread shows you that it’s very hard to achieve consensus on anything other than “they’re all cunts and the system is shit” (which is basically why I always vote for the party promising the smallest state / lowest taxes).

Part of the reason it’s impossible to achieve consensus is because many of the issues at hand are too complex and nebulous for anyone other than a tiny number of specialist experts to have a credible view on.

It seems like everyone & everything is subject to the forces of continuous improvement except our archaic system of governance. How do we address that?

I can see how you arrived at that, but knowing what the ‘smallest state / lowest taxes’ crew looks like, means your all in, tops off, front and centre for another Grenfell, more food banks, failing schools, failing NHS, more foreign ownership of the British public sector… on and on and on it goes… and they’ve been at it since day one, it’s not new behaviour for them.

Smallest state doesn’t equal less cunts / cuntery. It just means less effort from the government and that doesn’t end well for any of us.

People say they want a real choice. There was one when Corbyn was leader and he suffered a landslide defeat in 19. Elections are fought on the economy so tell me what policy differences there are between say Starmer and Sunak?

If anyone is interested in analysis about topical political issues, I highly recommend this guy. He puts out daily vids and does regular live discussions. He talks about the issues in a really straightforward way and has some good insights. Covers Brexit, Tories etc.

Yeah watched Robosphere as well. Find him less easy to listen to because you can kind of sense the anger and exasperation and can get a bit repetitive with “corrupt Tories”, “charlatans” etc. Phil is a bit more balanced imo and keeps a lighter mood and feels less echo chamber. Both put out decent content though.

Along_the_Wire exactly this. Just the NMW alone makes him 1000% better than any Tory PM of the last three decades. Britain, from a purely domestic policy perspective, was infinitely better under Labour.

whatever I think the Swiss model is pretty well put together. Very clear distinction between what is an optional referendum and a mandatory referendum, and what each should be used for. Such a common element of political life in the country that they’re rarely controversial.

It’s the once in generation / lifetime referenda that risk going to shit - like the UK’s 2016 EU vote. The fact that Cameron’s hubris led him to believe that he could use a slam-dunk ‘remain’ vote to shut up the euro-sceptic wing of his party, and then massively underplayed the remain campaign will piss me off to my dying days - even if the UK rejoins in some form over the next 20-30 years…

Agreed. The Tories have been split over the EU since we first joined, I’m convinced the only reason we got a referendum on it when we did is because of the current growing popularity of Farage and the far right; the Tories are terrified of splitting the vote on the right. For now and always they have been the only place for the cunts on the right to cast their vote, any split would fuck them, as it constantly does on the left. In or out of Europe, they just wanted Farage to go away and leave them alone.

The Tories wouldn’t give you a new referendum, now or in ten or twenty years time unless they knew the whole country was already onboard and they wouldn’t get any push back from their voters.

That’s a good point. The ‘once in a generation’ nature of the Brexit referendum definitely didn’t help in setting up the battleground and for putting people into divided camps. At the time, I suppose that was a potential reason for holding a second referendum on the deal i.e. to normalise referendums as a means of agreeing a way forward on important issues. As it later unfolded, I don’t think a second referendum would have landed on the side of Remain anyway.

For me, one of the most toxic and frustrating things at the time was that the Tories really excelled at creating populist slogans like “The British people are sick of this and just want to get Brexit done” that ran contrary to the spirit of referendums as it closed down avenues for further discussion and implanted the idea in the British consciousness that the only thing that mattered was getting Brexit done. IMO, that is why you have still got people clinging onto the idea that Johnson “got it done”, when in reality it still isn’t, and can never be.

I usually listen to Nick Ferrari from LBC in the morning in the car, which is a way of getting the worst Daily Mail/Sun/Express fuckwit views on everything. Is a good way of staying out of the echo chamber but not so good for stress levels and sheer frustration with the morons that call in that make you want to stab yourself in the eye.
