You’ve set yourself a a false dilemma. It doesn’t necessarily follow that an individual only has a sincere belief in something simply because it is a popular belief. There’s a range of other reasons that can also explain it, nor does it follow that they are doing so in the pursuit of attributing abhorrent views to political opponents.
