I went to Harvey’s MOS residency a few times and he mixed about 80% of the tracks and it worked… mostly all early doors/obscure stuff… sub 110 bpm.

Its the better way to do it. I did a beat matched chill mix a few years ago and it just didn’t have the same feel to it. All the classic 90s chillout mixes were not beat matched, and those are the ones that always stuck with me. Being able to instantly change the bpm and vibe is more important than the 2 min transition when playing this kind of stuff, imo.

Dan I know Howells gets a hard time on here (not really sure why as he’s always been great whenever I’ve seen him bar some dodgy back to back with Omid), but one of my favourite essential mixes is his 2002 one with a back to mine style. More than likely done on a computer, but well mixed regardless.

Edit: the dodgy back to back was when the scene was utter shit anyway - late noughties

…beatmatching all the way through is way too limiting for these type of mixes IMO, some nice dub delays/wash-outs (spinbacks!?) all have a place.

Used to put on a reggae night with a mate. We only had one deck plus an effects unit. It worked perfectly as reggae is hard to mix unless you’re using the same riddim

zackster I actually enjoyed this though, I’ve listened to it a couple of times now.

I think it jumps around a bit too much/is a bit too disjointed at the start, but it finds its (downtempo) groove at around the 40 minute mark with the Christo track. The mix could have almost started from there really.

As per comments above the Function ft Robert Owens track is excellent mind.
