jonattonyeah Bono a twat? Absolutely, but U2 overrated? That’s such a lazy cliche.

I still put the Joshua tree as one of my favourite albums of all time.

THE BEATLES??? Must stay away from this thread. People who say that usually never listened to a Beatles record from start to finish.

I’m not into Radiohead myself, depressing shite but I don’t think they’re a bad band, they’re brilliant musicians.

U2 have made some of the most iconic songs and albums of all time. Let’s be real here. You don’t have to like their music but overrated? Please.

    Eagles are a great shout.

Try living in an expat bar bubble, where halfway through your night it will be ruined by a bunch of amateurs taking over the stage to play Mustang Sally (I know this isn’t the Eagles), Hotel California and Desperado.

“Now, any requests?” “Yes, please fuck off.”

Pulp were overrated for sure. Common People isn’t a bad song but the band had a weird following during the Brit Pop years. Manic Street Preachers, Muse, I’d even throw Oasis in there but you can’t deny they made some great songs, maybe they’re overrated in the sense they were lauded as the best band in the world at one point. The Proclaimers were voted Scotlands best ever band recently, now that’s OVERRATED.

These threads are bilge anyway because it brings out the retard in people. I’ve heard lads say The Cure were overrated. That’s what your dealing with. Maybe you’re not into their sound but overrated? Clueless. In fact, fuck this thread and fuck you, Ed.

LT42 Oh, we’re writing bands off for having a ‘weird’ following are we?

That’s pretty much every decent rock band since the 70s in the bin then.

bosstrabs Weird following that stated they were better than Oasis and Blur and Cocker was a musical genius, so yes. Weird fucking cunts completely overrating one of the worst bands I’ve ever listened to.

I remember the Britpop wars actually. In our school, everyone was Oasis (being a northern school) except me and a few others who wanted to be contrarian and were Blur fans.

So, a bunch of parochial knuckle draggers who liked music for simpletons versus a smaller group of pretentious wankers.

I’d say the few Pulp fans were normal in comparison. (might have been different in Ireland, though)

Albarn is a genius and therefore Blur get a pass from me. To be honest, I steered clear of every band during the Britpop explosion and just stuck to Renaissance CDs and Essential Mixes. I hated pre-club bar music for that very reason, seeing cunts losing their shit to Park Life gives me the chills to this very day.

The whole brit pop era was fucking embarrassing.

I also vividly remember some absolute shamrag singing Chumbawumba’s only hit at the top of his lungs in a nightclub, popping like like Vanilla Ice during his “routine” and perpetrating this heinous crime right at the intersection of the dance floor and highway to the bar so everyone would see him. I wish I did something to stop it at the time.

Britpop was cringey. It wasn’t a particularly exciting time for indie music either

bosstrabs Popularity isn’t over-rating is it? Kyle Minogue isn’t over-rated and she’s had a load shitty hits.

Overrated in the sense that some people rate them, and that is too many.

        Super Furry Animals?
        Reef?

Super Furry Animals were great. Particularly Gruff Ryhs’ techno sets in the middle of their gigs that bewildered all the indie kids.

I never got into the them, in that, i never listened to any of their stuff but I did work with lads who would book tickets to see them months in advance. Packing campers and off they’d go. They seemed to have a Grateful Dead like cult following.

John Digweed ‎– Renaissance - The Mix Collection Part 2

Some decent albums here and there, but I never really got the Arctic Monkeys. Never understood The Killers too much either.

As LB said, the question itself is useless without first defining what overrated means.

To me it’s any band which slips into the popular consciousness without the musicianship to back it up. Usually it’s because said band got lucky - right place at the right time.

Often much worse when compared to the peer group but successfully marketed for a more mainstream audience.

The Chemical Brothers spring to mind.

            Musicianship isn’t everything though, either.

Ocean Colour Scene were well-regarded in terms of musicianship (Weller picked loads of them as his backing band) but had absolutely zero creativity/imagination and were a turgid din.

bosstrabs True, musicianship is the wrong word. I’m thinking about a talented musician in broader terms (someone with those attributes you mention).

Kings of Lyon are definitely my favourite medieval French band - awesome cover of Greensleeves.

Kings of Leon’s 1st album is a bona-fide classic. Raw and original. Then the record label vampires got a hold of them and turned them into a lighters in the air festival band.

Any band that has made millions selling music are just shrewd business people in my view and some people obviously must rate them so its not worth the endless subjective arguments.

Some people must like Nic Fanciulli, I rest my case.

                LT42 Albums 1 and 2 both superb.

A few years on and your mate who hates guitar music has Sex on Fire as his ringtone. Game over.

                -si- Florence and the machine

Good shout Si. She sounds like some comedy vocalist who sings all out of key.

                LT42
Completely agree. The first is very good indeed.

                Decent rant that tbf!

LT42 The International Language of Screaming a classic track and video.
