Just replaced the seal on a washing machine, christ I’ve aged 5 years! Definitely one of the most trickiest, fiddly and horrible diy jobs I’ve done.

Has anyone else done any diy jobs that have gone wrong or been successful, or does everyone else get the professionals in?

Had to replace the door handle on our washing machine a while back. It did take a while as i had to take the door off. The hardest bit was refitting the metal ring around the rubber seal. Took ages.
I am a decorator by trade. And find it’s much better to get a proper tradesman to do stuff. They have all the proper tools for a start and experience.

Dubman That’s what I’ve just been doing for the last couple of hours, but had to do the internal spring seal as well, absolute bastard to get on.

I’ve built plenty of flat pack furniture and I know how to use a power drill…..I feel like that counts as DIY 😂

Kells77 Love flat pack stuff from Ikea, I’ve just built a few wardrobes and draw packs this week.

Can be a nightmare if you don’t read the instructions or have zero common sense 😀👍

mono-stereo I’m not unreasonably convinced they say it’s shite so they can massively mark-up the trade crap. It’s difficult to use? I don’t give a fuck mate, the missus wants it up and that’s the end of it.

I’ve got a few customers who will only use it. It’s awful to use and take more coats. Benjamin Moore is very good but is expensive. I do use a lot of dulux trade but don’t use any oil based paints on any woodwork any more unless the customer wants it. Don’t think I’ve used any oil for more than 5 years.

I do loads of DIY, I enjoy it, Since we moved into our house a couple of years back, I’ve done quite a bit of plastering, plumbing and electrics. You can find out how to do just about anything on youtube. As Dubman mentioned earlier, having the right tools, is essential to get stuff done properly.

The guys who have just done our house used Dulux Trade. It looks nice and is all wipeable which is great seen as the kids hands are like magnets to walls for some reason

had to replace the dishwasher a few years back, should be a quick job, took me 5 hours, swore never to attempt to do anything myself again.

I am absolutely awful at DIY.

Stick £200 a month aside so when something needs doing, it comes out of the ‘kitty.’

WIll give most things a try, unless it involves anything an electrician should be doing. Not too keen on the thought of making a mess of something and killing someone in my house…

Even plumbing Si. You want to see some of the making good i have to do after people have attempted to do there own decorating. My builder friend often gets asked by new customers to look at his previous work. He has to tell them to ignore the decorating as the customer has done it themselves. They spend all that money on an extension then completely fook it up by doing the painting themselves.

Extremely basic plumbing, dm. Changing taps, connecting washing machines etc. I would certainly not fit a new bathroom or anything to that extent. Have mates in most of the trades so can call on them if doing a big project.

Thankfully my missus is a bit of a house proud freak so we get a mate who is a decorator in for any wallpaper or painting that is going in the downstairs rooms. I am happy to do the bathrooms upstairs, hall, woodwork etc. But anyone who says there isn’t a difference between a pro doing the job and a diy enthusiast is a fucking liar.

Wallpapering is a different thing entirely I’ve hung wallpapers that cost hundreds of pounds per roll to paper that’s £10 per roll. One mistake and it could cost you replacing the whole lot.

I would love to DIY the fuck out of my Bose Acoustimass Subwoofer. Fucking hell it’s been a massive headache since moving. And looks like it’s going to cost me $250 to fix. :/
