That’s unfair on Man Utd - if Southgate really wanted us to be a counter attacking team then you can’t have Foden and Kane as 2 of the front 3 offering zero pace and threat in behind.
If he wanted us to counter attack then he needs to bring Gordon on for Foden. He did correctly bring Watkins on for Kane later, mind, but there were still too many players unclear what they were meant to be doing.
And also, if he rather wants us to be a team that controls the possession, as starting Foden would more suggest, then we can’t be dropping so deep as soon as we go a goal up.
There’s just no joined-up thinking.
