Hi Dave, hope you are keeping well.
I agree masks are really important. I read a good article a few weeks back now which said there was strong empirical evidence of an extremely high correlation between mask wearing and reducing the spread of the virus. I think it was possibly Germany they had looked at, if I remember rightly, where one town had enforced masking strictly and their infection numbers had immediately and drastically fallen off a cliff compared to the more laissez-faire towns all around them. Clearly the evidence is in and it’s very apparent that the early equivocation from the WHO et al was a monumental blunder which cost lives and money. They should have looked to the Japs and the Koreans who learned lessons from the last Coronavirus (SARS), but they believed they knew different.
I’ve been wearing a face covering since March on my excursions. To protect others, I might add, as much as to protect myself. We have four in the house which we rotate and wash.
The question of enforcement is a whole different topic, I don’t know how you administer it. Is it down to security guards to prevent folk entering premises? Should staff be prevented from serving customers without it? I don’t know how you police it. Maybe we do need to take a hard-line approach to it but i don’t really know how it would work. I think a good start would be to say “look, we fucked this up, we should all have had masks glued to our face since March” but of course that is somewhat unlikely. They need the public to buy in to this concept en masse, is what I guess I am ultimately trying to get at, rather than trying to foist it upon the confused man in the street with threats of fines.
