As much as I hate VAR, it’s clearly needed when you look at how poor the ref was in the Villa v Newcastle game yesterday. Just aswell Newcastle won that in the end

[deleted] they’re out of practice precisely because of VAR. You had Murphy on comms moaning about the absence of VAR when he has spent the last two years hammering it.

alistair surely it’s not out of practise but referring standards reducing as a result of VAR.

I still think there needs to be a compromise where VAR is only used for clear mistakes or missed decisions, not the fine margin decisions, but that gets into a grey area of what the line is where it is used.

Either way if officials were better at their jobs we could scrape it altogether

It’s a pretty difficult job referring a football match (a mate of mine refereed up to Conference North level).

Would need someone like Hugo to come in and raise standards by putting everyone right.

Only use it for the clear and obvious stuff. The Semenyo goal against Newcastle in the league cup was a clear eaxample of when not to use it. A goal was scored and not one person in the stadium questioned it. Along comes VAR who took an age to try and find a reason to disallow it.
