Along_the_Wire If Utd are bought by an horrendous middle east unit, I’m done. I’ve been on the fence since the Euro Super League shenanigans a couple of years ago, but that would finish me off. There’s a well run, community based Premier League team two miles up the road from me. Fuck winning shit - I’d rather I supported a team with a tiny bit of gumption.

Couldn’t give a monkeys where the investment comes from if I’m honest. The fans group at Liverpool may have a big say anyway, but if not I’ll continue to watch and support.

Along_the_Wire LOL at that Saudi news for Liverpool and Man United. A swift changing of tunes incoming!

I’m not sure I would bother with Liverpool if the Saudis took over. 1) The obvious issues with Saudi Arabia, well-trodden on here and elsewhere. 2) No fun whatsoever supporting a team who can blow everyone out of the water in the transfer market (except possibly City, Real Madrid and PSG).

Who would I support? Not sure I’d even fucking bother since I don’t live in the UK anymore. If I was back? Maybe go to Chester occasionally. But I have Warrington RLFC to provide enough decent banter and crushing disappointment.

bosstrabs if you want to suffer some more, Bolton Wanderers are now accepting new supporters.

To be fair, I’d move on myself, but thankfully the chances of it ever happening to Bolton are zero

bosstrabs As if Liverpool and Manchester United haven’t been able to blow almost every other team out the transfer market for donkeys years. Fuck me. lol.

Along_the_Wire if you want to suffer some more, Bolton Wanderers are now accepting new supporters.

Bolton is too far from me, I have no connection to the place except I once went out with a Bolton burd for about 6 months in my early 20s.

I thought it was an even bigger dump than Warrington tbh. With even worse scrotes hanging around the town centre. It’s actually an awkward place to get to from Cheshire, driving or by train you basically have to go almost in and out of Manchester.

Wally As if Liverpool and Manchester United haven’t been able to blow almost every other team out the transfer market for donkeys years. Fuck me. lol.

Yeah, but it’s ultimately been because of revenues made from the clubs being very well-supported and qualifying for Europe, not filthy Arab money being pumped in.

bosstrabs You’ll be back in this very thread saying ’well, the fans don’t get a choice so I’m fine with it.' within 3 weeks.

Wally I don’t think so Wal. The only club I’ve ever been a home and away regular matchgoing fan of is Warrington anyway. I could quite easily not give that much of a toss about a Saudi-owned Liverpool.

                bosstrabs
Don’t think Wally’s wired that way Dave, which is fair enough.

                But any ‘debate’ is pointless

Another thing is, even if fans aren’t owners, they ALL get a choice.

If I were a Newcastle fan, I’m 100% certain I’d fuck them off and if I couldn’t live without football go and watch Gateshead or someone.

bosstrabs Bolton is too far from me

Coming from China, do the few extra km really make much difference?!

bosstrabs Just for debate - what would you do if the Saudis bought Warrington?

American private equity money is the way forward lads.

Wally Just for debate - what would you do if the Saudis bought Warrington?

It’s not even on the horizon so it’s not even a question. Why would the Saudis think rugby league a good investment? Why would anyone who doesn’t even have a passionate connection to the sport? It just isn’t.

Warrington are fortunate in that Simon Moran owns them (SJM Concerts), he puts more money in than he should because he’s a Warrington lad. They actually have the biggest wage bill in English rugby league because they have a big support and a benevolent owner, but they’re a fucking joke, making bad signings year after year on way more money than they should be paid. As a Newcastle fan, you’ll probably appreciate this, it’s just like pre-Ashley Newcastle, or Ridsdale era Leeds. It’s actually a good laugh ‘embracing the shitness’. Who is this new player we’ve signed for a fortune? Yeah, this will be our year… then three months later, in a relegation scrap.

I wouldn’t want to change this for anything, even though we’re laughed at by Wigan and St Helens fans. It’s my team, it’s what sport is all about.

So, yeah, to answer your question, I’d probably think the same - 1) I don’t want the club being owned by a despicable, despotic regime and 2) I actually, deep down, don’t want to lose this constant rollercoaster of hope and then crushing disappointment that is what being a fan is all about, for a situation when we can literally buy ALL the good players and ensure we win the lot every season. It would be wank, and I’d have no interest.
