He also bet on his own team to lose 13 times, albeit when he was not playing.

His potential sentence was significantly reduced because he was said to have a gambling addiction. Really it could have been longer.

So again, much more than just “a bet”.

The bets he was charged for began in February 2017, and ran until Jan 2021, so would have included seasons he spent on loan at Scunthorpe and Wigan where he didn’t play every game. They also could have included cup games where starting line-ups were less predictable, or games where he’d been announced as an injury doubt.

And even if it was expected he’d have been in a team, betting on yourself to score is clearly in breach of betting regulations anyway, and could lead to you directly trying to influence the result more by being more selfish in front of goal.
