Yeah I’ve been hesitant to watch as I’ve been an emotional wreck lately with movies. No idea why. Maybe just a long, stressful 12 months (Covid, and beyond Covid). I was getting choked up at the end of Ford V. Ferrari, for fucks sake. Utter shambles. I don’t think I can handle anything too serious.

With all shit going on in the world no wonder people are immersing themselves in Marvel/Adventure type films.

My boy put on Call of The Wild (Harrison Ford) the other night and I thought this is going to be awful, but I was pleasantly surprised. Great kids film.

The Oak Room. Described as a thriller. Not really sure what to make of it really - I enjoyed it, but it looks and feels like a stretched out Netflix number. 6/10 and worth a watch

I couldn’t stand Pacino in Godfather 2. There, I said it. Preferred part 1 if I’m honest, it just flowed along better and Brando was a much better watch as Don Corleone.

LT42 I thought it was his best performance ever. Serpico the only other one where he doesn’t do the whole OTT ’she’s got a GREAT ASS!' routine. There is the one scene in godfather pt2 where he’s having a right old barney at Kay, but that’s in the context of her refusing him access to his kids.

Watched both Nomadland and the Sound of Metal this week….. I can’t for the life of me understand how Nomadland came out on top and won the major categories. Nomadland felt like a documentary - many of the actors were actual nomads… I get that they have heart rendering stories but at times it all felt a bit wooden to me.

Frances McDormand is clearly a talented actress but wasn’t hers a pretty one dimensional performance - I mean how many times did we see her with that grimace on her face?

I felt a lot more moved by the Sound of Metal… much less preachy and emotive… maybe it’s me!

It’s the streaming affect. The old codgers who vote on these things have a bias towards traditional studio film makers. Netflix and Amazon will have a long fight before they’re considered alongside the likes of Searchlight. With streaming, the gatekeeping of what is or isn’t good has been lost. I’d guess a lot of Oscar voters are bitter about that.

True History of the Kelly Gang. Great film, pretty grim mind - some very strong acting. I do like a grim Aussie film to be fair. 8/10

Beverly Hills Cop II. Not as good as the first one, but Eddie Murphy just dominates this one. At end of his peak, same year he quit stand up. I wonder if those two are related.
