Censor (2021, On Demand)

Movie set in the mid-80s about a bunch of film censors dealing with video nasties starring Niamh Algar (who seems to be a real rising star these days), Nicholas “Nathan Barley” Burns, Michael Smiley and the gorgeous Sophia La Porta.

This is a low-budget Film4 production, the feature debut of Welsh director Prano Bailey-Bond. To quote one of the film’s websites “Steeped in 1980s aesthetics, Censor is an atmospheric and suspenseful love letter to the horror classics of the past”. I think that pretty much sums it up.

It’s a very decent little indie Brit film. Not a classic by any means, but well worth a watch especially if you want a little trip back to the days of 18 rated VHS titles.

The Dry (2020, SnideVision)

Eric Bana is a high-flying Adelaide cop who goes back to his arid outback hometown for his old mate’s funeral and gets mixed up in a whodunnit and dredges up a load of old memories from the past. This is a solid mystery thriller, almost like an Aussie Agatha Christie type of vibe. Bana is class as always. Features one of the most memorable lines from a film in ages: Cop: “how would you describe your relationship to the deceased?” Suspect: “masturbatory”.

Wrath of Man (2021, SnideVision)

After Guy Ritchie’s last piece of dogshite The Gentlemen I was somewhat reluctant to give this a go, but after the opening scene and the title sequence, I knew this was going to be good. This is the ageless Jason Statham doing what Jason Statham does best. A great cast with Josh Hartnett, Eddie Marsan, Niamh Algar and the superb Scott Eastwood.

Statham is a security guard looking after trucks full of cash, but he has a hidden agenda. And it’s not about the money.

This was fucking quality from start to finish.

Just downloaded Prisoners and was looking forward to it. Realised after about ten seconds of watching it that I’d seen it. £7.99 down the pan. Great film.
