So….I watched Top Gun Maverick last night

I really enjoyed it. My main gripe is that the first 90 minutes were excellent, a really solid action movie with a good storyline. The last 30 or 40 minutes however went way too Hollywood for me, and felt out of kilter with what had gone before. It was still an enjoyable watch though.

One other minor gripe…..I can’t stand sequels/remakes that force in ‘nods’ to the original film. It happened in this….the piano in the bar scene and the beach football scene. Totally not needed IMO

gcw Those actions scenes are some of the best you will ever see, no CGI bullshit. If you watch the behind the scenes you will see how far the cast had to go to, to with stand those g forces. I left the cinema feeling pretty buzzed after seeing it but i love a bit of speed and adrenaline.

He’s also the only one without a six pack, which is why he was the only one wearing a shirt in the volleyball scene. I think this is why he was killed off. Six packs only. Plus he was married, so not gay.

Seriously though… 5/10??? You ruined it for yourself by waiting this long to watch it.

The Northman (2022)

Starts off promisingly. Very cinematic and atmospheric. I thought Kidman and Hawke were well cast. Skarsgård brings an incredible physicality to the screen, he’s like CGI at times. Somewhere towards the middle it loses its way quite badly. The accents are an issue and there are Moments of Unintentional Comedy. I really wanted to like it and there were some great bits of visual flare, but it was fucking boring and stupid by the end sadly. ATJ’s arse was decent but her accent sure wasn’t. Bjork, Thor and then Ralph Ineson getting crowbarred in kind of summed up the stupidity of the whole thing.

C_J Saw it. There’s too much Norse mythology bollocks in it for me. Hannu may disagree. Would have preferred a pure blood fest.

There’s a great article in The Times by an ex fighter pilot saying there is a lot of bollocks in the film.

Along_the_Wire No surprise really as it was the same with the first one.

Thoroughly enjoyed it anyway. Early doors some of the scenes had poor writing and delivery, but once it got going it was great. The action scenes were ace even if they were Hollywood OTT. Didn’t have the epic soundtrack of the first though.

Chip & Dale : Rescue Rangers - I know, I know. yep, it’s the school half term so trying to find anything at all to keep the kid entertained. For a kids film it’s actually pretty good. Goes for the ‘Who framed roger rabbit’ vibe (Roger even shows up) and while it doesn’t reach the lofty heights of Zemekis and Hoskins brilliance, there’s a lot to like for a kids flick with a noirish detective story going on and chip and dale being washed up actors who had their heyday and are living with being ex stars. (Sounds bonkers for a kids Disney flick I know. Probably why it went straight to D+). If you have kids, sling it on for them.

The Voices 7/10

Surreal movie about a serial killer who hears animals talking to him. Ends in a bizarre musical number.

The Contractor 8/10

Bourne like action movie, under 2 hours and fast paced.
