Saw X. Guilty pleasure - load of ‘ol shite, but seen the others, so why not. Much the same stuff - my advice if you’re caught up in one of his games and you’ve got three minutes to do something terrible to yourself, don’t waste valuable seconds shouting “No!” And trying to get out of the the trap you’re in - all that will happen is, you’ll complete the worst of your task, but the clock will run down whilst the next stage takes place and take your life in a horrific fashion just seconds before your freedom. Atrocious attacking and story, but still 5/10

Napoleon. ⅘. This movie will divide opinion. Ridley and Joaquin Phoenix chose to portray Napoleon as a buffoon for one. It was pretty hilarious at times.

Vanessa Kirby stole the movie from Phoenix as Josephine though. I’ll be surprised if she doesn’t get at least nominated for an Oscar for the role.

Deliverance (1972). I bought a Blu Ray of this for a fiver ages ago, only got around to watching it today when I had 108 minutes to spare. I’ve seen it once before, but it was the VHS days, so awhile ago. Pretty fucking good still. And I’m sure inspirational for some here.

The Lobster (2015)

I’d been meaning to see this for a while. A director known for weird arthouse stuff plus a well-known cast like Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Olivia Colman, Ben Whishaw, John C Reilly and a Cannes Jury prize on top means you know you’re in for something a bit niche that could be really great or terrible.

For me it was terrible. The quirky black comedy stuff wears thin pretty quickly and it took all my inner strength to watch right to the end. You might like it if you’re in the mood for something really irreverent, silly and original.

The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). First time watching somehow. Damn good movie, everyone was pretty good in this, except maybe Jude Law. Matt Damon is good at playing slimy, I wish he’d do it more often.

The Dead Zone (1983)

Grant’s review of this made curious (although I can’t find it now so I may have imagined it). Christopher Walken and Martin Sheen looked young forty fucking years ago, huh?

I’d describe this as the sort of low-budget, trashy late-night hokum that reminds you of watching movies as a kid with the sound down so your parents wouldn’t wake up, right up to the mandatory naked tit moment.

Really enjoyed Napoleon on the big screen, epic in scale with some of the best battle scenes I have seen. Bawdy in parts too. Special mention to Rupert Everett as Wellington. Talk about chewing the scenery.

alistair Ridley’s done three battle scenes in the same spot, start of Gladiator and Robin Hood (it’s the French castle where King Richard dies) and now the hill where Napoleon directs the battle in Austerlitz. The location is a small forest just south of London. Still apparently showing scars of the Gladiator-battle.
