Predator (1987)

Not seen this in a long time. Its a solid action movie but for some reason it’s nowhere near my favourite Arnie movies. Not sure why. I had forgotten about some of the classic quips…..‘stick around’ after impaling some poor chap with a 12 inch knife lol

8 out of 10 muscles from me

May December: Had no clue what I was signing up for which made the opening scene where Julianne Moore gives what appears to be her son a longer than usual peck on the lips in the morning very weird. The wife sort of explained the premise after that because things were going over my head. With the context the movie felt a little less weird, and it’s a really weird movie. But the acting makes it all worth it, Moore and Portman properly sizing each other up going toe to toe. Worth a watch, solid ending. First time in my life I’ve felt any sort of sympathy for a victim of this situation (don’t want to spoil).

gcw if the terrorist camp raid looks different from the rest of the movie it’s because McTiernan left that to a second unit-director. I recently learned that from a podcast. It’s a lot more your standard 80s action fare compared to the rest of the movie. Once a year watch for me, and yes I have it on 4K Blu Ray. McTiernan did hell of an action movie trifecta by directing this, Die Hard and Hunt for Red October all one after another.

McTiernan also got a studio note to show more of guns firing, so he added the scene where they level the jungle and hit nothing to show how useless guns are against the Predator. And then was aghast how everyone copied it in their action movies completely missing the point.

Come back next week for more Predator-facts.

Homegrove I only ever knew the Van Damme stat (that he was the original actor in the predator suit) but didn’t know the bits you mention. Makes sense thinking about it, that camp scene was a bit Hollywood wasn’t it .

Might watch Predator 2 in the next week, I’ve never seen it (have heard its a turkey though)

gcw have not seen it since the 90s either. Can’t remember liking it then either. I like Predators a lot though, and Prey is the second best movie in the franchise IMO. If you can handle that the hero is a GIRL. Shane Black’s The Predator is apparently an abomination, so best to stay away from that. Never even considered watching that or the Alien vs Predator-movies.

I loved Godzilla Minus One at home too. It really gave our home theater soundsystem a workout. I bet the neighbors heard it too, despite our house being detached.

Running Scared (1986). An ok 80s buddy cop-movie I’d never seen before. Billy Crystal somehow is convincing as a badass. Still very much on in the coked up era of Hollywood, as the plot seems to be about five set pieces put together with scotch tape.

        😆 never change Hannu

Hit Man: Genuinely thought I hit play on a rom com when I saw this on Netflix. Found myself pleasantly surprised with the script and writing and quite entertained with the storyline and plot. Maybe a tad bit too long. Only found out it was a. Richard Linklater movie when the credits rolled, and it kinda made sense. Easy viewing and the Hit Man title is a bit of a red herring. Spoiler alert etc etc. 7.7 / 10

Green Book. Anything with Viggo Mortensen in is bound to be decent, and this was. 8/10

Triangle of Sadness (2022). Did not like it. Somehow all the “rich people are terrible” movies and TV shows don’t work for me. Yeah, we know. I don’t need to watch a 2,5 hour long movie to learn that. Now I’m scared to watch Parasite because I promised the same friend who recommended this to me to finally check it.

The Fall Guy. Jesus it was awful, but it did have some funny bits and enjoyed the very end. For that, it avoids a 1 and gets a 4/10. Will never watch it again.

Watched True Lies this week, don’t think I’d seen it since it came out. It’s better than 90% of the crap that passes for an action movie now. Didn’t take itself too seriously, allowing for classic chase scenes like the horse in the elevator. 😂

I am so fucking bored of films with tedious fight scenes that go on for ages. I’ve always hated long car chases.

Along_the_Wire yeah me too. The more realistic the fight scene the better. The one in that sauna in Eastern Promises is about as good as it gets

RichM naked men fighting in a sauna is as good as it gets

Whatever floats your boat Rich, we won’t judge you 🫶
