Fuck me, you snooze you lose. The low-hanging fruits have all been stolen.
Cycle Drivel
Was anyone due to do the l’Etape this year? I was, rumour it’s cancelled even if the Tour goes ahead.
If they do race from September onwards, there’s gonna a lot of racing going on through to the end of 2020
Was supposed to do a couple of charity MTB rides but both have been cancelled at the moment. Hopefully they’ll be rescheduled later in the year.
I’ve been offered a great deal on some carbon rims after my front alloy wheel needed to be replaced. Due to a fault. If I buy the front wheel there give me the back wheel for free. Is it worth the upgrade or not.
Carbon without a doubt on road bikes. They are much stiffer, so not sure if that’s an advantage on trails. Do you have disc brakes? What to pros use?
Along_the_Wire
All MTB bikes have disc brakes and the rotor size is dependent on what type of riding you do. Do you not use disc brakes on road bikes?
I think I’ll go for the carbon wheels. It would only cost me £420 for the pair all in.
Dubman That is fucking cheap for carbon wheels - check reviews.
I have disc on my commuter/workhorse bike and have nice carbon wheels on that - saves me a fortune not having to replace the rims. Racing bikes and my TT bike have calliper brakes. Now disc systems are getting lighter, I think all my new bikes will have discs apart from the TT bike, as that’s an aero issue.
Dubman What make are they? £420 sounds suspiciously cheap. If your gonna go carbon I would go for Santa Cruz wheels.

I have. There from Bontrager & are made in the US. Obviously they are not top end pro race wheels but perfect for me.
I did wonder why they didn’t use disc brakes on road bikes. There’s so much more stopping power.
Dubman Stopping power isn’t such an issue - in races where you’ve got a mix of disc and calliper and it can get a little hairy as those with discs slow sharply. The main advantage for me that the rims last forever meaning you can ride more expensive, but better wheels. Stiffness is a major factor too - I’ll never ride alloy wheels again.
mono-stereo
That’s just for the front wheel. They are Bontrager are Line pro 30 wheels going on my Trek remedy 8.
I would love a Santa Cruz or yeti bike but can’t justify spending on over 5k on a bike.
Dubman …Bontrager are decent, not flashy but solid kit. They used to spec them on Cotic’s etc., sounds a decent deal.
Personally not risked carbon rims on my MTB as being 17+ stone I’d be concerned about bad impacts compromising them. Have them on my roadie though (not expensive ones, Chinese factory) and they are an awesome upgrade. Rotating weight is the biggest weight saving on a bike, you really feel the difference.
Unbroken1 You do lot of road cycling, Damo?
Along_the_Wire …not my forte really mate, always been a mountain biker, but I train with a tri club (mainly swimming) and living where I live I’m surrounded by roadies so have been lured to the dark side!
Been out a few times a week over lockdown… usually try to do a couple of 20-25 milers a week, nothing serious like you nutters.
Did a 20 minute power test this morning - 387W. Got to be happy with that - there’d better be racing this season.

Sounds impressive. But I haven’t a clue what it actually means.
