Also I have just given away a perfectly good bike! Should have mentioned this 2 weeks earlier. I say perfectly good, it was a 2014 boardman bike that was £1k 7 years ago.

I would say aim for shimano groupsets. Disc brakes if you can. Wheels are an easy upgrade later on

Another point to be made is the lead time in getting a brand new bike. In the MTB world bikes were taking upto & over 6mths to be delivered which has forced the price of second hand bikes to go up in price considerably. They reckon it’s down to the pandemic so hopefully it should back to normal in a while.

Dubman …yeah, looking at Cotics (still!) and it’s minimum 6 months for my frame size in the colour I want, most parts are 12-16 week lead time too. Also, by the time your order is processed, often it’s next years colours/spec which is fucking annoying, esp when dealing with smaller brands that do max. 2 colours/year.

mono-stereo you can get a nice bike from Ribble or Canyon there - specialized Allez is a great value bike. Groupset is important - minimum Shimano 105, if you can get Ultegra, a happy days - hell of a groupset that.

The choice you make is comfort from here. My view is that cycling isn’t meant to be comfortable.

Diagnosing bike noises. We all riding a nice quiet bike apart from the freehub sound. My bikes been riding perfectly then all of a sudden I’ve started hearing a creaking sound which is driving me nuts.
I’ve tightened the saddle bolts & bars but it’s still there. So I’m not sure if it’s the wheel bearings, bottom bracket or headset. Is there a way of checking these on the bike stand or is it a trip to the bike shop to see if they can fix it.

It could be. I did replace the chainring earlier in the year. The bolts may need tightening. It only happens when I pedal. So I think that eliminates the wheels & headset.

Creaking in my experience is bottom bracket, chainring or cleat/pedals. Most of the time it’s cleats/pedals

I almost chucked an old (and v expensive) bike in the local canal due to an infuriating drive train creak that I couldn’t find the source of.

In the end a mate of mine who’s a pro bike mechanic stripped it all down and got to the bottom of it. Annoyingly I can’t remember what it was now, something to do with one of the cranks I think.

Annoying squeaks are invariably one of 3 things, the saddle isnt clamped tight enough of the rails. Stand and pedal, if it still squeaks it isn’t that.

Plus check your BB and your pedals. The cages round the spds on my harddtail squeak there isn’t a bunch I can do to stop it.

Loads of issues with a dodgy rear mech hanger and my thru-axle recently. On another bike my seatpost is seized into the frame. Basically give everything a loosen, shake and tighten every 6-12 months.

benson This is age advice. I went to change a saddle on my commuter bike and one of the bolts snapped inside the clamp. New seat post for £129 - took me a while and some effort to get the knackered seatpost out.

Parked up the car on Dartmoor and walked about 2 miles to the 3rd King of Mountain finish line yesterday. Plenty of other people there too, it was baking hot, no shade. One old dear needed parademics. Saw 2 lizards.

Love Dartmoor, it can be ruthless all year round.
