Alright guys (and.. are there girls?)

I’ve been feeling better about joining this community of late as I’m one of the newer ones here. I came across this place looking for Prog boards - at the moment this is all I know other than facebook groups. I much prefer the way a message board functions so glad this is here.

What I’ve been wondering is what the story was with this board. Where it came from, who’s in here etc. Although boards and other services that aren’t facebook let you generate a username, I like to keep it as real as possible. I used to be on Gurn.net back in the day and that was all about slagging each other off but with a good Tunespotters forum and a good “On A Serious Note” forum (sidenote: maybe you guys should add that here actually - it was really good for proper deep chats on genuine topics)

I’ve been starting to try Reddit to connect with folk but I’m not as invested time wise as this and I’m actually starting to learn names on here (which i’m terrible at until there’s enough repetition)

When I see massive threads I tend not to even look because its hard to catch up with where one was going 400 posts in so there are only certain threads that catch my interest from time to time.

But yeah I’d like to know it’s back story and perhaps even who else is good to support in terms of DJing or producing good Prog / Techno music - its nice to see one alive again that has genuinely got people coming back.

I mean, the tl;dr version is that a lot of these people frequented lots of different boards in the past, but specifically there are holdovers from the old global underground forum, and the old bedrock boards. Some of us have known each other for nearly 20 years. 🙂

    Global Underground
4four (migration from GU, more tech housey)
Another board i cant remember the name of!
    Faith Fanzine (House)
Bedrock, though couldn’t really be arsed with.

Theres a really decent crowd on here, behind all the ribbing, they’re all stand up folks

Met most of these folks on a cigar forum. Tops lads all.

        zackster
Zack was actually abducted during a mumsnet smash and grab.

Found scrambling around the depths asking how he could book a trip to Center Parcs

Originally on GU. Fond memories of that. 😅 I never really posted much on 4Four or Bedrock.
        Came here to retire. 👴

Mad_Cyril wow thats quite a lot of accumulation into this one. Its mental how much forums died around 2010 / during the uprising of Facebook including a local one I really loved (attached to Promise, Shindig and Habit in Newcastle)

Forums are way better in a lot of ways IMO - they aren’t forcing agendas and using algorithms to think up what to show you. The content / users basically moderate that themselves

Re: the ribbing - tell you what this feels like for me. I was 16 when through a friend I discovered Gurn.net. Being the youngest and relatively new to the internet at first I took the ribbing personally. Then in one fell swoop a year later I met them at Creamfields 03 and it clicked that the whole thing was banter just not how I go about it. Without seeing peoples facial expressions or realising they’re just bored at work/university I couldn’t believe peoples attitudes to one another until that point. Having not met you guys yet it’s brought a reminiscent feeling of that point (even though its nowhere near that)

Only been on board since the old Bedrock forum. So a new boy compared to a lot of the others.

Monostereo. Hursty set up the first iteration for this, which started as a replacement for Bedrock, after Digweed shut it in early 2018.

The early days of GU board where proper wild west, no humour too dark, no melter to wild!

Your best bet here, is to read non of it and just jump in feet first and have a dig at Ed or Dave, should pay dividends with a few upvotes.

I joined Bedrock in 2006 aged 18 when I first got into the scene. The rest is history!

As Homegrove said, when Diggers closed Bedrock, I just googled forums and set one up in a couple of minutes. This was a decent stop gap until mono unleashed this classy platform which is infinitely better and on our own terms.

I do like this format. Did he build this himself or use one of those off the shelf platforms you can buy? Anywhere he would appreciate donations towards running costs?

I’m a GU and 4Four refugee. Some surliness and some weirdos, sure. But all in all, top people all around. Good music. Good bants. Just fun, really.

But, yeah, as Amps said - GU was another level entirely. That place was a riot.

jonattonyeah GU was another level entirely. That place was a riot.

Couldn’t refresh the page quick enough some times. I assume many of those people are now in prison.

Was on the old bedrock forum since 2001. Was on 4four as well.

had a lot of good times with a lot of people I have met in this journey.

The old GU board sounds absolute savage.

Will never happen again. Social media killed the message board for the most part (sans Reddit which isn’t really the same) and no brand would ever let the hijinks that occurred on GU fall under their name. Oddly, it seemed to police itself quite well. But that might be rose-colored memories.
