God, that’s such a dumb thing to say, but I think I might know where he’s getting that from.
For demographic documents here in the States, the first question under Race/Ethnicity is “Do you identify as Latino/a/x?” “Yes”, prompts a whole bunch of options; whereas “No” brings you to the standard “Black/African American, White”.
But that’s just for statistical purposes given demographics in the US and immigration patterns. It’s not about “community” or “cultural diversity” or some sort of ranking.
