If that’s the point, that’s not a good movie. Why would that be a movie? Seems to me the point was don’t be so self-absorbed because it likely won’t work out in the end. Which is, duh.

The soundtrack is also annoying (thanks, Joey Negro).

Spacey’s best? LA Confidential.

    jonattonyeah Spacey’s best? LA Confidential.

One of James Ellroy’s most bang average, tedious and turgid books made into a hotchpotch of crap film?

    I’m out.

    jonattonyeah Spacey’s best? LA Confidential.

That’s everyone’s best - one of the best films ever made. This is what I mean about the comic book super hero shit - it’s blocking good films - when was the last time you saw a film remotely as good as LA Confidential?

LA Confidential is an awesome flick and a very enjoyable book.

American Beauty has aged horribly. Boomers thought it had this mind blowing insight into American life when really it was just a vapid piece of crap.

Imagine being in the pub with Pondwater crapping on about LA Confidential, a boring man droning on about a boring film based on a boring book that absolute spengs salivate over. Then, like all daft Seppos, probably droning on about the Chauvin case, making some spectacularly pointless grandstanding liberal point about I don’t know what.

I would fucking chuck half my beer away and get out of there pronto.

In his bar. Him serving you some innovative crappy cocktail that’s completely wrong, like it has a block of square ice in a martini glass or some other daft shit. With him playing Futureshock - Sparc on repeat. Droning on about the low vaccine take-up amongst ‘BAME’ people and the structural racism that’s preventing them getting vaccinated.

Fucking cocktail in the plant pot. Plant pot over his head.

jonattonyeah The dialogue is pretentious (actually pretentious, not how many just throw the word around lackadaisically). The characters are not characters, but rather caricatures. Nobody is remotely likeable, nor relatable, because the dialogue is pretentious and they are all caricatures. People might have liked the “message” back then, the banality and frustration of a seemingly perfect suburban life, but its message is actually trite and stupid and tone deaf. It’s a terrible movie with terrible themes with an actor who turned out to be a terrible person. The End.

It’s a melodrama, what else would you expect?

          A lol for Dave!

          Don’t make excuses now.

But I appreciate the fan fiction, Dave! Light-years better than American Beauty.

zackster Boomers thought it had this mind blowing insight into American life when really it was just a vapid piece of crap.

Fair point, especially in the UK

bosstrabs Listening to anyone bore on about the ‘proper way’ to do cocktail of any description:

Fucking awful subject that brings out over opinionated cunts.

Amps I don’t have opinions on cocktails.

I was once in a bar in Beijing owned by two Seppo sisters who insisted on inventing their own cocktails, and they were offering me and my mate their concoctions.

One actually did have a big square block of ice in a martini glass. You figure out the logistics of trying to drink that. Seems like the kind of thing Pondwater would do.

Jon comparing AB to Crash is a fantastic analogy. Another embarrassing move to win best picture. Only diff is I don’t think people held them in quite the same esteem. Boomers really think/thought AB openly bared the American Soul.
