Had a storming evening at KoKo with Matthew Dekay and Lee Burridge last night.
Really liked KoKo (eventually) - odd venue - kind of an anti-club with the theatre decor. All very clean and tidy which was a bit weird at first - standing up on the balcony reminded me of outernet but the place was jumping and had an atmosphere so all good (so not like Outernet at all 😂)
As expected was packed to the rafters with hot lasses - was a bit grim that the club felt the need to use anti spiking drinks covers on all lasses drinks - safety first and all that but they must have had a real problem with it. It was packed full of too cool for school posers too. I doubt more than 20% of that crowd knew who Lee Burridge is. Never seen so many sunglasses in a club before. I kept thinking they’d not last 5 mins in a grungy shithole / proper club oopp north. Wonder if that’s why Buridge never plays up there - the poser crowd just isn’t big enough to sustain him. I’d love to see how Max Cooper’s glitch techno goes down at Koko in a few weeks lol.
The ‘warm up’ dj - Veronica Fleyta - was absolutely abysmal. Rinsing it out, playing god awful cheese (one tune sampled Gangster’s paradise for example) and dropping a peak time remix of Mr. Brightside as her final tune. Matthew Dekay must have been tbinking WTAF? just killed it off completely and started again from scratch when he come on. He was decent. A solid workman like warm up set with him playing more groove stuff for the first hour and picking up the pace with some bangers just before Burridge come on.
Lee was great. Opening with Tommy Rafa - Outta Nowhere - was momentarily worried it was gonna be a greatest hits job but other than one other tune in the first 20 mins, I didn’t recognise anything. He was really good as you’d expect. Shame they didn’t bin the first lass off and get Dekay and Burridge on a bit earlier though. 2am start for Lee was a bit much without stimulants. #LackingMinerals 😂 - Got to about 4am and called it a day.
So top drawer overall. Would go back to Koko. Maybe for Howells and Cattaneo. 👍🏻
