Thing is, England looked to be absolutely cruising for the first 30 minutes - Italy were looking seriously worried. They did well to claw their way back into it. Guys like Verratti and Jorginho were key, always been available and starving England of possession. England don’t have that type of playmaker. Henderson’s probably the closest and as much as he gets slagged off I think he might have made a difference if he’s fully fit coming into it. They also rely far too much on Sterling playing well in every match to break the lines.

It’s hard to say how much of it was down to England’s failings and how much to Italy’s quality but I’d probably lean more towards the latter. Bottom line is that England pushed a top team all the way and looked good enough to win it after 45 mins. Bringing on Rashford and Sancho just for the penalties like some NFL kicker was, I think, appalling inexcusable management sadly.

Generally I agree - ITV worth it nowadays for Keane.

No one could touch Lynam in the studio, with Davies or Motson on mic duties back in the day, and for that reason I stayed loyal to BBC for years.

I loved Motson, but preferred Davies, who unfortunately suffered from his versatility that he could cover almost any sport so got shunted off the football.

A man who knew when to be quiet, rather than waffling on like that cunt Matterface.

He’s being defended becuase England did well by any measure, having only conseeded 2 goals the entire tournament, winning 2 of the 4 knockout games in normal time, reaching a major final for the first time since 1966, taking best side in the tournament to pens (not losing to them in normal or extra time).

All of these things are significant and it’s fucking daft to gloss over it all by moaning about how he chose to set up, or saying we had an easy run, as regardless of who we played the job needs to be fucking done and there are no walkovers.
