Disc 2s of Superior Quality
- Edited
007 Disc 2. Jesus Christ. IDK what I was expecting, but it assuredly was not that. Opening up with 2 jungle tracks, followed by a 5 minute ambient SH101 solo… Talk about great flow and track placement. Oakey clearly learned something during the time he spent mixing Disc 1, because the beat matching and cue points at least make some kind of sense on this disc. Once you get past the warm up tracks, that is. I had legitimately only ever heard one of these tunes before, so IDK what track titles are, but that Waiting For The Burning Flame tune was a bop. Had me doing the Crystal Light Challenge in my office.
I think the high point of the mix, at least for me, was towards the end when he actually pulled off an in key mix. What I liked about it was that even though the transition was sounding good his natural reaction was to bail as soon as possible. And it absolutely wasn’t because the prior record ended. No. Mid bar the track he was mixing out of just suddenly fades into nothing over the course of 2 beats. Talk about a master at the height of his craft! After listening to both discs, I think it is obvious Disc 2 is the connoisseur’s choice. It has less to do with 2 being good, than it does with 1 being the worst Dj mix I have ever heard; live, studio, or otherwise. I swear at one point he starts a tune by cuing it on the second beat of the record that it’s proceeded by. What a crime that Twilo, the prog Mecca, is captured for the series of record with a mix from Paul fucking Oakenfold.
So anyways, is Oslo Disc 2 any good?

zackster So anyways, is Oslo Disc 2 any good?
Nope.
New York has quality tunes, even if you want to turn your nose up at the mixing. Oslo hardly even has quality tunes.
Disc 2 has Taucher ‘Waters’, which is great, but that’s pretty much it. In fact, the track Oakey decides to play after such a high point manages to perhaps be the worst track to grace a GU comp.
On the subject of the thread, Disc 2 is still somehow better than Disc 1, which is mostly drum & bass.
ScottBailey fair enough, but it’s a really poor effort. a professional should be objectively much, much better when it comes to flow, technical transitions, programming, and ensuring the sum is greater than the parts. he failed on every account, which is my problem. a bedroom dj puts out this mix, i have no issue with it.
I don’t even blame Paul, honestly. I don’t think he knows any better. Having watched several of his interviews throughout the years, I am fairly sure he is retarded. He talks like someone who was drilled in the head with a log splitter. The idiots that turned up to see him spin and James & Andy are the real issue, because they are the ones exploiting a person with mental (and physical) deficiencies.
ScottBailey It’s an interesting collection of tracks that probably not a lot of others had or were playing at that point in time
just to add, this is basically my point. oakenfold’s entire career was predicated on timing. if he shows up 10-15 years later, there’s no way any of us would have even heard of him. he’s like tong, contributed early in the scene, but really isn’t any good.

I mean, he mixes quite well considering he’s a primate.
Disc 1 of GU007 is almost perfect. I cried to it listening to it driving round ibiza. I’ve nver actually heard CD2 but cannot believe it could be any better.
lets switch gears and talk about how good disc 1 of buenos aires is. always been a big fan of that one. and while i like disc 2 as well, the first one is better.
303abuser Playlist is all over the place and the mixing is atrocious. Would expect better from such a big name DJ
ScottBailey lol i probably deserve that.

303abuser all good pal. Enjoying the debate.
Love Twin Town and Breakthrough, but it honestly sounds like he’s just aligned everything in ProTools and used a basic fade out on the tune before when mixing. Lazy!
ScottBailey yeah me too, it’s all good fun and makes no difference in the world anyways.
the mixing is lazy for sure, but at least it’s beat matched and phrased properly, even if some of the levels leave something to be desired. the programming is good though, i like the flow (intro is great and the last four to close have always done it for me).
007 CD1 is far more memorable than 006 CD2, in a good way…
I’m finding out very quickly from this thread that some of you did far too many yokes back in the day.
ScottBailey I think I have to give it a listen tomorrow! No recollection of any of that.
Some revelations throughout!

BT - Fibonacci Sequence is some opener. Talk about a statement of intent. Sasha fucking years ahead of the crowd with that selection. Still sounds fresh 20 years later.

As for Xpander feeling out of place, yeah it does, but that’s purely becuase it’s an anthem. He’d of been better off sticking it on the end.
mono-stereo
It’s wicked tune. Wish I had it on vinyl.
Dubman Wouldn’t sound out of place on any set today.
Xpander > Belfunk
This was the only descent mix Paul did

Agreed. It fits the vibe perfectly. It is the timing that is the problem. Due to Perception being such a long anthem, I think few shorter tracks would have worked better at the half way point. I guess you could also argue that Bluefish is the problem as it is the mix between the two that totally kills the mix. I opt to point the finger at Xpander because Bluefish sets up the back end of the mix so nicely.
mono-stereo its a disc 1 FFS!
zackster I’M JUST SAYING
