Hursty Thanks. Yeah it was a lot of non-technical single track, some shale/rocky trails. The downhills were just crushing on the ankles because they were so steep. Passed a few 100 miler zombies who looked completely ruined at the tops of hills.

I’ve got a 22k/350m elevation trail race in 3 weeks, then an offseason of base aerobic work and strength training. I need to work on my quad and core strength. Debating doing this 50 again next year or moving up to the 100k. Will just depend on how much time I have to dedicate to training. The event was so good, I can’t see myself not going back.

What’s that 74K like? Hilly trails or flat? I’m sure you’ve got the fitness to at least get through it, training properly just makes it more enjoyable likely.

303abuser cheers! It’s such a mental race, I’ve no aspirations to do it, to be honest it’s more orienteering which is just hacking through undergrowth and bogs

Do like a decent trail where you can turn the legs over.

I need to pick up the training, had this never ending cough since Jan and thats curtailed any speed training.

50k race early March is in doubt but the 100k is still on for May

Hursty I’m fascinated by the whole thing. Not something I’m interested in doing, but it’s crazy to watch. You’ve probably seen the documentary with Gary Robbins trying to complete it and if you haven’t, do yourself a favour and find it. Incredible watch.

How’d your race go in November? I’d think you’d be ready for the 100k in 3 months, you’ve got a decent base. I’m just building up again now, 65k/week, weights 2x/week. Heading out for 25k in a couple of hours.

Can you link a brother up please?

      Here’s the one I mentioned …

This one is also really good …

No problem. The backdrop with Gary Robbins is that he’s a really well liked guy in the trail/ultra communities. He lives a province over from me and runs a few races there. It’s impossible not to cheer for him.

Just finished my first 100 km training week. Amazing how I can feel this fit and half broken at the same time.

Played all weekend at a GB Masters basketball tournament in Sheffield. Some big units in that part of the world, and that’s just the women.

Seriously though, the women looked like Geoff Capes in drag even after a few pints.

Milky’s legendary fear of The North resurfaces.

Glad you made it home safe princess x

            Really is grim up north.

Hursty Finished my first 16 week base block, had a 15 km trail race in May, ran well and finished 7th overall, 3rd in ag. Now I’m starting peak training for 100k in september. Thoroughly motivated by fear haha.

303abuser you’ll be fine, sounds like you are getting the volume in which is always key. How’s your nutrition?

I did an 80k in the mountains back in May, got cooked in the heat and didn’t get enough salt on board so although I finished it wasn’t pretty, medical attention was required 😂

I’ve got a 100 miler booked for September and possibly a 77miler next month as a warm up.

              We will see

Hursty I hope so. Three weeks over 100k in June, a 50k training run a month from now, and 3 weeks over 110k by mid-august. If I can get enough hill training in, I should be ok. I want to enjoy it and hopefully be able to “race” it without death marching.

Heat is a massive obstacle, no shame in getting the medics involve haha. The course I’m doing (same as my 50k last fall, just two loops this time) is pretty exposed and parts are in a valley that heat up and get little airflow. Last year was 20 degrees, which was perfect, but if it’s anywhere near 30, it’s a completely different beast.

What kind of weekly volume are you doing? The thought of 100 miles is still so foreign to me. Unless I accidentally really love this 100k, I’m thinking more frequent, much shorter races next year.

Edit: Nutrition is good, I think. Slow drip tailwind, eating a combination of “real” food, aiming for 100 calories every 20 minutes, 60-80 grams of carbs per hour, with a little protein/fat in the form of almonds and cashews.
