  • Let me have my moment - Canada FINALLY beat Mexico 2-1

FUCKING GET IN!

Canada beat Mexico last night at the Iceteca 2-1 in -15 Celsius weather in World Cup Qualifying. I’m beyond chuffed. We’ve been shit for so long and now we’re not shit. We’re the only team that are unbeaten in the final 8 teams of CONCACAFs World Cup Qualifying round. Mexico and the US have both lost. Canada were easily the better side for 86 minutes, before fatigue started setting in and Mexico finally woke up. In the past year our record against Mexico is 1-1-1. We’ve drawn with them at home at Estadio Azteca, nearly beat them in the Gold Cup (they scored a 92 minute heartbreaker) and now this!

We’ve only qualified once in 1986. The last time we beat Mexico was on February 20, 2000. Before that it was in 1990. We’ve played them a total of 38 times since 1957. We’ve won 4, drawn 10 and lost 24. This is huge for the game here and our side seems to only be getting better!

Highlights and commentary from last night:

An absolutely INSANE goal from Alphonso Davies in the previous qualifying game (I was there with my little fella):

And Antonio made absolute mugs out of the United States for Jamaica 😂 some goal

Yeah, Jamaica despite having the talent, have been sadly a bit disappointing. I hope they manage to jump ahead of Panama but it’s not looking likely.

I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE seeing Mexico forced to the intercontinental round of qualifying. They’ve been so smug for years that it would look good on them.

Mad_Cyril we’ve still got six games left to properly qualify. Those games are in January, February and March respectively. I believe we only have one home game left in January and the rest are all away at some challenging venues. The top three teams go through to Qatar and the fourth goes to an intercontinental playoff.

The Central American fans and FAs are quite well known for all sorts of dirty tricks like having bands play outside the hotel room the night before, setting off fireworks all night outside the hotel, buses mysteriously breaking down to and from training, food being spoiled, elevators not working, etc. It’s actually known in this region as being ‘CONCACAFed’ because these sorts of things are so commons. The Mexicans are known to throw bags of urine on opposing teams at the Azteca!

The most challenging in terms of opposition will be the USA on the road and probably Panama, who we thrashed at home 4-1 and I saw in the flesh. If Jamaica somehow find their stride, they might put up a fight too.

i should maybe start paying attention, but there was no way i was going to sit in -15 degree weather to watch last night.

303abuser You should. We’re legitimately a quality side. All their games going forward are being televised by Sportsnet. If you don’t have traditional terrestrial TV, you can watch them via the One Soccer app.

I am however, with you on that one regarding -15. Fuck that noise! Edmonton did come out though! 44,000 people even though they sold 50,000+ tickets. That’s hardly a small number!

loopdokter yeah, i was surprised how many people showed up, especially with how not supportive of soccer this city is in general. i’ll believe they’re good when they beat an actual team. it’s a small sample size, the only bit i’ve seen was the second half against panama in october, but i wasn’t overly impressed. the game looked like an mls match and i walked away from it thinking they’d lose to a decent premier side, hopefully i’m wrong.

Mad_Cyril ta! The original goal was to be up and ready for 2026 when we co-host, but it’s become apparent that we’re ready for it now and are playing accordingly.

As a fan of the game, it used to be like watching a middle aged Sunday pub side play Mexico and watching us get a good bollocking as a result. The women’s team would draw more than three times the crowds than the men’s side.

Now the Prime Minister is dropping in to say hi and taking photo ops. Drake is hitting up Alphonso Davies on Instagram and saying he wants to meet the team. Wayne ‘The Great One’ Gretzky (arguably the greatest ever ice hockey player and a Canadian icon) is messaging them with support, etc. Videos of our goals are going viral and topics about the team are trending internationally on Twitter. News is being lead off with stories of their consistent successive efforts on the pitch. There’s a real buzz around them here and it’s about time. It was like living in the Dark Ages for far too long in a country where just three years ago they were lucky to be even televised because they were so terrible.

Most of my life we’ve been beyond abysmal losing to teams like Mauritiana, Dominique (who aren’t even a FIFA team) etc. That’s even in the last five years! I’ve always supported Germany as a result of my heritage, but now….

Must admit, i did think of you loopy when I saw the headline in my google news. Congrats.

At least you’ve the funds to get out there now.

Dan To Qatar? Who on bloody earth would want to go to such a God-forsaken place? They’re having all the games in the evening and are going to have to mist the stadiums because it’s so hot there. Thousands of workers have died building the stadiums and human rights abuses are common because the workers are usually Indian, Bangladeshi and Filipino and have no rights. The Qatari men keep their women in closets (such a great idea!). Oh, and you won’t be able to drink.

Sounds lovely! When can I book my ticket?!

rhouses the fact that it’s a headline is pretty indicative of the way things are going in qualifying for us so far.

            From zeroes to heroes Rhouses.

Yes, you can use that line as long as you credit me. #bantz

And Loopy has gone absolutley full Partridge there with the last post.

How are things my good man?

seanc80 lol. I had no idea ‘zeroes to heroes’ was one of his. Ledge

Not sure when the excitement of the Canada win over Mexico will die down tbh. I’m absolutely buzzing. 💯

Millsy lol. I had no idea ‘zeroes to heroes’ was one of his. Ledge

I love the way Loopy was so excited about his piece of self-proclaimed genius that reassurances were sought for fear that, if was to be re-used, it must be referred back to him in some way.

                  What a man.

seanc80 a few more from the mind of Jay include:
