I hear a lot of talk along the lines of “there’s no way he’d do this, it’s purely to appease his domestic audience and the milibloggers, there’s too much legislative and bureaucratic impediments to this ever happening”
But you have to ask yourself, what’s the point of the referendums and the continued escalation if he’s going to continue to tolerate western support? If he draws new lines, calls up conscripts and then continues to suffer losses without doing anything, it’s got to be over for him, there’s no off ramp.
I think if someone doesn’t back off there’s a definite risk of things getting a whole lot worse and I’d be amazed if Vlad is the one that backs off unfortunately.
