Smallman1 should be closer to 20 Ed! Will be playing with Denons, which adds to the excitement. Glad I’ve tried them before, so it won’t be jumping into the deep end with no ability to swim.

I’m after a bit of input….

I’ve recently got back into mucking around on my technics, which I have had for over 20 years now, although they have had absolutely minimal interaction in the last 10 years as life has just got in the way

Anyway….i have been asked to play for an hour this weekend at a friend’s wedding party. The two of us used to put on a few nights in our hometown many years ago, and he’s still kept his interest in the scene. The idea is that after the older relations clear off the two of us will play a few tunes to finish the evening off

I’ve been practicing a lot recently as I want to pull off a half passable set . One thing I’m finding….even though some tracks can be mixed together, the beats will never 100% match and will always sound a little off. Is that a key thing? Even though they sound like they should mix together, there is always a little bit off about the transition? I’m turning the bass down on the incoming track but it’s still there?

Am I just trying to put tracks together that don’t go?

I’ve noticed you can get away with a lot of instances where the key shouldn’t work if you bring the track in at the right time, heavily percussive points might work ?

I’m assuming it’s not beats from your description?

Also there are also tracks that won’t go together for a number of reasons.

Maybe you might be overly sensitive to it but the audience might not notice / care.

I take it you’re playing 4/4 in which case if it sounds slightly out then you may need a slight adjustment on the pitch control.

gcw Are you talking about a couple of specific tracks here or are you having these issues with most transitions?.

If you are getting the beatmatching right and keeping on top of any drifting, It’s probably a clash of keys, or as you said, the tracks just don’t go together.

gcw Listen back to a recording of your mixes and judge from that rather than what you are hearing at the time. You might find that part of the ‘miss match’ that you are hearing is noise from your cans, noise from the carts, a little slap off a wall etc. So a recording listened back in the car should give a you a clean monitoring space.

Also, you might have your kicks lined up like NASA’s space ducks on re-entry, but it might be some other bit of percussion making it sound off. You’ll get this a bit if you mix a track with lots of swing and one without into each other.

Yeah. It could be the wrong key. Sometimes I choose a track and almost instantly I know it’s not going to mix right unless it’s going in a different direction.

Matt - in my head it feels like every mix, but I’m doing myself a disservice there as it’s probably only 2 or 3.

Dubman - I’m changing the pitch control but it just feels like it’s always slightly off

Cyril - it is indeed fun but also frustrating (as you know). I’m focusing too much on long winded transitions when I just need to focus on the basics. As you say, the audience really won’t care.

Should have said …this is two x technics and a Behringer mixer. Nothing else (i missed the boat on CDJs and mp3 dj’ing)

I went straight from vinyl to using a controller & mp3’s and have now gone back to just vinyl.

In how good condition are the technics and how old are they? Have they been repaired or recalibrated recently? Is the pitch fader smooth? etc.

A solid pair of technics can stay steady remarkably well, but it’s also possible to have decks that can drift a bit, and where the speed might be a tad inconsistent even if you’re not moving the pitch bend at the time. This can make super smooth transitions very tough.

Dubman yeah that’s what I need to do. Prob my last ever time playing to someone other than my dog, so may as well embrace it
