Some good advice on here, fully agree with the most important factor being well maintained rather than just mileage.

Also consider all the new Clean Air Zone charges, we’ve just been stung for a £189 for driving into Bristol in December, didn’t know about the charge and the penalty letter was lost in the post.

Turns out you need a Euro 6 diesel to be compliant currently or a Euro 4,5, or 6 Petrol.

Check out what the city near you requires as that could have a bearing on choice

gcw you’ve also got a lot more protection if you buy your used car from an trusted authorised dealer than an individual, although you’ll likely end up paying more. Those autotrader type websites strike me as a risky bet

gcw If you use a franchise dealer for servicing, yes - service and maintenance costs will be higher than an equivalent Vauxhall, Ford etc. If you’re not planning on trying to maintain the sell-on value, and have a good local garage you can use, I’d head there for your servicing.

This may be from listening to too many Americans - and they might have a slightly different setup over there so people can correct me if I’m mistaken on this - but from my very limited car knowledge Toyota Corollas seem to regularly appear as reliable, inexpensive cars with low servicing costs.

Just noticed Dan mentioned looking at one above as well.

Situation is complicated somewhat as my missus has just been told her car (Qashqai) needs a new engine for £5k, and given that she is absolutely hopeless with money, I’ll no doubt be helping her buy a car as well.

Honestly, if I didnt have a dog and therefore need the boot space, I’d pick up something a bit more snazzy rather than the inevitable Mondeo I’ll end up with 🙂

alistair I wouldn’t rule it out. I’ve never been into cars that much and I don’t actually drive that many miles. I’ve had a Corsa from brand new since 2013, I’m on 88k miles and it’s done me well. The wife’s car is the family car so there’s just never been a need to upgrade until now. If I was in my 20s again I’m sure my plans would be different.

I got my 320d from a car supermarket. Imperial I think it was. No fucking around. Price seen is what is paid.

Drove it away 2 hours later.

I’d previously had a brand new focus. Bmw was a proper step up. I know diesel is a dirty word but a euro 6 is clean. And they do proper miles.

My commute is at least 22 miles each way so worth it.

decent amount of car for the money. slight underpowered but I had the 320 efficient dynamics that was 163bhp and was fine.

Last time we where ready to pull the trigger, pretty much knew what we wanted options wise etc. The wanker at the Audi dealership could not have been less interested. Actually getting him to unlock the fucking car was a battle. He lost himself a 60 grand sale right there, absolute bellend. Went to another Audi dealer.

Meanwhile Porsche are all smiles and will happily just chuck you the keys if you want a look around somthing, generally much less snobby i’ve found. Certinaly won me over as a future customer, just a much more relaxed experience with them.

mono-stereo aiming for an estate, but you’re right there are thousands of options and I suppose it’s always a gamble isnt it. On the one hand I just want something that gets me from A to B, but on the other hand it is nice to have a few mod cons on a car.

And agree on the dealership thing - any time I’ve been in a dealership it’s as if they are playing a game to annoy you as much as possible
