Last thing I’ll say on this is, I might not agree with Lineker but I do think his heart’s in the right place and I don’t think he should be sacked or otherwise pressured into not speaking his mind. Let the people decide.

The government should be able to defend their policy against criticism and shouldn’t seek to suppress it.

Homegrove again that is completely clutching at straws and a gross exaggeration. Firstly, the UK Home Secretary was specifically referring to illegal immigrants - not asylum seekers. Nor did she use the words “swarm” or “invasion” in her video.

Also, what is this “far right aggression” which the Conservative government are supposedly defending, and how is it anywhere near close to the violence experienced by Jews in 1930s Germany?!

The Nazis were also stripping away the rights of Jews who had been legally living in the country for decades - then of course did even more then just strip away their rights - how is that the same as controlling the process for people illegally migrating to a country in the future?

Also, the Nazi party didn’t just merely “end fair elections” - they banned all political opposition thus bringing about a complete dictatorship! How is this the same as the Conservatives? Did I miss a news story whereby the Labour party had been outlawed?!

I’m sure the other bullet points would be similarly nonsense were they to be briefly checked.

Again, it’s completely egregious and pig-headed to try and paint the two as comparable. Do people learn nothing in school any more? Or are they really so scummy and desperate to trivialise such things in order to try and score cheap political points? It’s simply not a valid argument. It’s incendiary falsehood.

Oh look, some floppy Jewish individual has shut the argument down again, the monopoly have spoken, how wrong we are to even think about mentioning the Nazis. Yeah, I guess I do expect that. Maybe I’ve got the definition wrong, but I’ve always believed that someone that beats their wife, whether once or on multiple occasions, is a wife beater.

Honestly, if that’s the type of thing they’re going after her for … if that’s their gotcha moment … I think it really makes the point how baseless and empty their claims are. It’s really weird imo and shows how it’s not about objective truth, it’s about a fabricated self-sustained delusion. Facts are dangerous scary things which threaten to wake them up.

“well, if he’d been convicted of rape, would Fiona have said ah yes but he only raped his wife the once!”

the answer to which, obviously, would be no because technically, in the eyes of the law, he would be a convicted rapist and there would be no obligation to clarify the context, unlike in the case highlighted in which Yasmin Alibhai-Brown has lazily called him something which is not strictly true in a legal sense which obviously forces Bruce like any good journalist to clarify the allegation to avoid legal jeopardy.

C_J I’m not ‘going after her’ in particular. I’m not suggesting that her comment was on the same scale as Lineker’s. But I do think it’s symptomatic of the problem at the BBC, where it’s critics of the Government that get hauled over the coals.

Simple example. Alan Sugar - encouraged people to vote for the Tories in the run up to the 2019 election. He’s tweeted a picture of Jeremy Corbyn sitting next to Hitler. No comment from the BBC on either of these. Why do you think that is?

I’m thinking of Labour MP Kate Osborne and chief executive of Women’s Aid Farah Nazeer in particular (who basically said that if he’s done it once then he’s done it many times, again highlighting my point about the disconnect between factual evidence-based reality and collectively-invented reality).

If your point is that the Government is exerting too much power over the state broadcaster then I think this specific example is pretty weak but on the general principle I would back you 100% and I think it’s an important point which deserves close scrutiny and probably has some merit - but these shitty examples really undermine the case and just make their proponents seem demented.

vinnyt77 my understanding is that you’ve slightly misunderstood or misrepresented what happened. He didn’t loan him the money, he helped broker the loan. I think what happened is he basically told the lender that he’d pay it back if Johnson defaulted on it. Which isn’t necessarily any better, of course, because it could be a way of facilitating a bribe really couldn’t it.

I think it sounds like corruption and it should be investigated thoroughly. They’re probably smart enough to have ensured they’ve done it properly though and can’t be done for it, I guess. Arguably they could go after Sharp under fit and proper person rules maybe.
