I think people need to bear in mind that France are a really good team, maybe the very best team around, and I think they showed that last night. They showed an ability to self-organise on the pitch, react to what was happening, nullify England and keep their chances to a minimum but also carry a threat and ruthless potency going forward that England arguably lacked. I think France were that little bit more streetwise than England which is not something i’m sure you can teach or coach into players. I don’t know how you cultivate that really.
I felt that France probably just about shaded it and deserved to go through - but there was basically nothing in it so England shouldn’t feel like they need to tear it all up and start again. When players have penalty kicks like that you never know what can happen. No one really expected Kane to miss that and if the roles were reversed and it was Mbappe in that situation, he could miss too.
