[deleted] Yes, but at the time many DJs and journalists said ‘progressive’ was an ‘attitude’ rather than an actual genre.

I’m not saying I agree with them.

But here, as one example, is the insert from Cass’ ‘Planet Progressive’ mix for Mixmag.

bosstrabs I am afraid that insert loses me. Weatherall and dj harvey type balearic I can understand as an attitude. Because it can include everything from wooden tops, the Residents, to early 90s ny garage.

In fact, I remember the guvnor saying in one interview: ‘never be afraid of the cheese’ and I tend to agree. Like all things it can be overdone, but who doesn’t like a casu marzu after a night on the skunk?

[deleted] I think the insert reads like a load of old bollocks.

It is just one (of many) artifact to show that at the time a lot of people were talking about progressive in the same terms that Monostereo is above. It was not unusual. It’s an equally common interpretation.

Then again, a lot of people talked about punk as an attitude rather than a genre when it emerged, when in hindsight it was clearly a definable genre.

Genres are restrictive confides mostly brought into the world not by musicians but by marketing departments, journalists and consumers who can’t help but to compartmentalise such things because people want to intertwine music with such illusions as personal ‘identity’ and get all emotionally attached to such things.

Back when I cared, I would generally refer to the music genre as “prog” and the way of life as “progressive”.

January 4th and already a shoo-in for quote of the year.

        😆

Has to be a wind-up, though.

        Lol! Wondrously horrific

rhouses Any tattoos on your person concerning this life mantra?

haha The amount of times I’ve used the words aspirational and progressive as a newly formed HR dweeb to discuss company culture & values, is embarrassing.

        No two ways about it.

Properly facing into your overall shitness there Rhouse. Respect.

Millsy Not my best year career wise, and I was unemployed all of 2020.

That being said, Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told.

Fucking hell. Would someone violently attack rhouses with a claw hammer please. Worst fucking thing I’ve ever read 🤮

Fair play, rhouses. That’s absolutely sensational stuff. Fuck anyone who doesn’t have the balls to make declarations like that!

I’m not sure you’ve had the level of interest your post deserves either, rhouses. In terms of the progressive way of life, can we expand slightly, with some examples of progressive clothing, foods, toiletries and methods of transport…

Think he means progressively eating more and getting progressively bigger.

That insert is marketing or journalist bollocks - I’m sure a high percentage of DJs and producers from a broad range of musical genres would like to classify themselves as “forward-thinking”. The Simon Reynolds quote MRSPharoah posted is a fairly decent description of ‘progressive’ as a genre.

          Leaving a ‘progressive’ log unflushed?
