Its a business fraud case which he may have gotten away with if he wasn’t running for Prez at the time. Now its committing fraud to cover up other crimes which falls under ‘campaign finance’ crimes.

So its serious and not just about the hush payments, which by themselves aren’t illegal. The only reason this got found out was through Muellers investigation when they identified the scheme and immediately turned it over to the Attorney’s office of the Southern District citing “Business Wire Fraud” and “FECA Violations” related to Michael Cohen, who has already sang like a canary and done time for it.
