Not surprising that when Ed posts a link it’s a lot of overly simplistic shite. Deutsche Welle are a German state-owned broadcaster that make BBC World Service seem exciting and this vid is clearly aimed at people who are utterly clueless, like Ed.
There is some interesting old footage in the vid - but also a lot of shallow, agenda-driven left-wing nonsense.
In line with a general leftist trend of making almost everything about race and bending history to suit their narrative, the vid spouts stuff like this:
“The knowledge that techno stems from African American communities has largely escaped public consciousness”
aside from the fact that sites like RA have in recent years also been pushing this claim, and also that I’m sure most people slightly in to techno would have awareness of Atkins, May and Saunderson anyway.
But then there’s:
Zero reference in the doc that the Detroit guys were heavily influenced by Kraftwerk, who it could also reasonably be argued were as much the inventors of techno as anyone else.
Zero reference to ‘Technoclub’ and Dorian Gray in Frankfurt, and Talla 2XLC who was using the term ‘techno’ basically before anyone in the early 80s.
Zero reference to the likes of Yello Magic Orchestra, Moroder, Manuel Gottsching, who were also very early pioneers of repetitive electronic music.
Only passing reference to the actual technology, eg Roland drum machines from Japan and Moog synths from the US, which made the music possible.
Pretty poor showing considering the title of the vid is supposedly “How Techno was born”.
The sounds and scenes were developed via a collective cultural exchange between many different people over many years, many of which this vid ignores to suit the narrative it is trying to push.
