Amps Shout out to the board Tories, which way will you be voting; are you all looking at what Truss is saying and thinking ’it’s Rishi all the way, she’s clearly out of touch with what is needed, we’ll be out of power in two years time if she gets in’. Or is it more of a case of ’she’s exactly what we need’?
I like Sunak and dislike Truss. But in terms of their policies I’m more ambivalent. Take for example Truss’s “tax cuts” - she’s talking about reversing the NI increase, which is a policy I have a lot of sympathy for because NI is a tax on employment that hits people on the minimum wage. So I’d back that policy. She’s also looking to scrap the planned rise in corporation tax which, again, is a tax on jobs and investment in my eyes so I’d have sympathy with the view that scrapping this rise is a good thing for long-term prosperity.
The problem with this of course is that you can’t be seen to be cutting taxes at a time of great need. The public are shitting it. People are going to have to ration their consumption of fuel and the poorest are going to need a lot of support until prices fall again like oil has started to. I think gas prices have to come down sharply in the not too distant future. They are looking to reform the way prices are set, at the moment it’s based on the price of the most expensive product required to meet demand meaning a lot of excess profits for cheaper producers.
There’s definitely going to be a couple of bad years, though, and I’d much prefer Sunak in charge of that. Truss seems pretty feckless to me but it seems like it’s a done deal unfortunately. I like the idea of cutting taxes, particularly for those on low incomes - but not necessarily right this second.
