bosstrabs I am back tonight. Just slept for a couple of hours and will try again for another couple. I also have a training course on Monday after a night shift.
We do get our heads down at work as well overnight but a few weeks ago I did from Monday through to Friday evening sleeping not more than 120 mins at a time. No booze is a given during this period.
Loads of us went back to night shifts during covid. Lots of consultants doing nights again because all our junior doctors were staffing the massively expanded ICU. We covered all the usual emergency surgery that still needed doing (blocked bowels / appendectomies etc). We didn’t do it with cheese and wine in the garden, no matter what Fabricant said.
When I am ‘on call’ with junior doctor in the hospitalI still have to be available so that I am in attendance within 30 mins. For lots of us that means having to stay at the hospital as we live too far away.
Clearly we need to run a 24/7 NHS but I promise you the notion of us all down the golf club or the private hospital leaving the juniors to do all the work is long gone. It probably did exist but well before my time
