Personality politics has become an increasingly powerful part of parliamentary elections over the past 30 years. Many of Johnson’s MP backers have publicly said they’re supporting him because he has a mandate from 2019, that he is the only one that can win the next election. You’re suggesting it’s the party that has the mandate. That may be true in terms of the rules of our democracy, but you know very well that many in the electorate will vote for the leader of a party rather than the party itself.
